Patten Pending As Reds Up Stakes For 2011

Salford City Reds have completed the major signing of full-back Luke Patten from  NRL club Canterbury Bulldogs on a three-year deal. Patten was one of the hottest properties in he competition in 2010 and further signals the Reds’ intentions as they move into their final season at The Willows with arguably their biggest signing since Super League began.

The Reds have been steadily signing up their key stars on long term contracts and with the likes of Aussie compatriot Daniel Holdsworth signing a three-year deal, Salford have again been boosted by good news, especially having beaten other interested parties to land their man.

His strong work ethic and his commitment to responsibilities off the field set a great benchmark for everyone who has played alongside him

‘The General’ has played 220 first grade games since joining the Bulldogs in 2001 and represented NSW Country on three occasions and was awarded the Bulldogs Player of the Year two years in succession in season 2006 and 2007 after his dominant and consistent displays at the back.

In 2007, Patten missed two games due to a shoulder injury but still managed to produce the most metres gained for the Bulldogs with a total of 3,341 metres.

“Luke has been one of this Club’s great leaders and we are sorry to see him go,” said Bulldogs’ Chief Executive  Todd Greenberg.

“We wish him well as he makes the most of an opportunity in England and thank him for the service he has provided to the Bulldogs for the past 10 years. He will long be remembered for his incredible reliability and determination as the last line of defence and for his inspirational plays. His strong work ethic and his commitment to responsibilities off the field set a great benchmark for everyone who has played alongside him.”

Salford City Reds Chairman John Wilkinson, OBE said: “Today it is undoubtedly great news for Salford to announce the signing of Luke Patten from the Bulldogs. Luke has been one of the finest full-backs in the world for many years and it is a signal of our intent for the future. As part of our plan as we move to our new home in 2012, it is our intention to strengthen the team and compete in what will be an historical year for our Club.

“We are continuing to look at bringing further exceptional talent to The Willows for the final season, so as to leave lasting memories with the fans of a tremendous old stadium. Every game next season will shape a piece of history and we are determined that there will be some truly memorable occasions. Luke Patten has bought into that vision and will very much be a part of it.”

Reds’ Director of Football Steve Simms said: “We are absolutely delighted to have signed Luke. He is a terrific player, explosive from the back and we are very pleased he will be joining the Reds right at the beginning of a new era for the Club. He, as are we all, is excited by the direction and vision for the Reds, and we look forward to welcoming him into our ranks for pre-season training.”
