Broughton Set For England Bow

September 29, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds’ Jodie Broughton will make his England debut on Sunday as Steve McNamara’s new-look squad head to Cumbria.

England coach Steve McNamara has named a 19-man squad for Sunday’s Garry Purdham Memorial Game at the Recreation Ground in Whitehaven. All 19 players will play against Cumbria on Sunday when McNamara, who will name his starting line tomorrow (Thursday), is expecting a strong performance.

“We’re looking forward to Sunday, it’s an important game for lots of reasons and all the players are very keen to play,” said McNamara.

“A lot of these players haven’t played for a while and the game time will be invaluable.

“The stakes are very high for everone: we leave for the Four Nations next Friday and all the players know that places on the trip are still open.

“That’s a big incentive for everyone involved. There is also the fact that we are representing England, which means everything to the players, and the desire to do what we can for Garry’s family.”

McNamara has not drafted into his squad any of the Huddersfield Giants and Leeds Rhinos who were eliminated from the Engage Super League play-offs.

“We feel it’s important that we go to Cumbria and put in a performance to be proud of and to do that you need quality preparation,” explained McNamara.

“It wouldn’t be fair to the Leeds and Huddersfield players to select them for a game they haven’t had time to prepare for and it wouldn’t be fair on the Cumbrians to host an England team that didn’t do itself justice.

“I also have the players’ welfare to consider and from a mental and physical perspective it would be extremely tough for those guys to lift themselves.

“I have no doubts that this group of players is ready to go.”

England will be without Adrian Morley this weekend as the Warrington prop continues his rehabilitation from a minor back injury.

Reds Freeze 2011 Membership Prices

September 17, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds are delighted to announce that, even with the massive rebuilding for next season’s squad, that 2011 Membership and Season Ticket prices won’t cost a penny more than they did in 2011.

Fans can still pick up a Family Membership for their household for just £50, which then allows them to purchase discounted Season tickets costing just £130 (Adult), £65 (Senior) or £28 for a Junior.

For the first time, supporters will also be able to choose their free gift from a selection of home or away shirt or a piece of Willows history – a piece of turf, suspended in resin and framed as a momento of the last year of the famous old stadium (see the pack for details).

Reds’ Chairman John Wilkinson, OBE said: “I am delighted to be able to say that despite this significant financial investment in the squad, we have again frozen our Season Ticket prices for next year.

“We thought long and hard about the prices and there was a strong argument for an increase – our 2011 squad will be the most expensive squad assembled in my near 30 years as Chairman, and there were thoughts that an increase in the price of Season Tickets would be justified by such an improvement on the field. Our minimum goal this season is to finish in the playoffs and have a good cup run, but we don’t want to be one season wonders – we want to win trophies, and that requires quality players like Luke Patten and Feka Palea’aesina – obviously that costs money.”

Membership and Season Tickets go on sale in the Club Shop on Tuesday 21 September at 1pm and membership packs will begin to be sent out to existing members at the start of next week.

Classy Holdsworth Scoops Triple At Awards Night

September 17, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds Australian star Daniel Holdsworth bagged all three major awards at the Club’s gala Presentation evening at The Willows last night (Thurs). In an event hosted by Sky Sports Eddie Hemmings, Holdsworth made it a clean sweep, taking home the Supporter’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Player of the Year trophies after some scintillating performances in his first Super League season.

Even though he was injured for the final five rounds of the competition the quietly-spoken Aussie did enough to show his new three-year contract at the Club will be a very wise investment as the Reds look to rebuild their new-look team around him in 2011 and beyond.

There were plenty of other awards handed out too, with local-boy Adam Neal picking up the Young Player of the Year gong despite only joining Salford mid-way through the season. Neal said: “It’s an honour to be playing for my hometown club, but I can’t thank all other other players and everybody here for making me feel so welcome. It will be tough to stay in the team with the quality of players we have signed for next season, but that’s the challenge.”

The Club’s two special awards were also given out at the event. The 2011 Neil Hilton Clubman of the Year went to Groundsman Danny Huffman for consistently producing one of the best playing surfaces in sport while the Leon Walker Memorial Trophy went to departing academy physio Katy McDonnell for all the hard work put in over five years at the club, especially with her incredible fund-raising efforts for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) in the wake of Leon’s tragic death.

The younger squads at The Willows were also recognised with trophies going to Gareth Owen, who made his Super League debut this year (Senior Academy Player of the Year), Adam Dybdall (Junior Academy Player of the Year), Adam Clay (Senior Academy Player’s Player of the Year) and Callum Marriot (Junior Academy Player’s Player of the Year)

It was also a night celebrating the careers of the many Reds’ stars departing for pastures new, and all the leaving players were presented with a Club watch and momento from Forever Reds.

There was also a special presentation to skipper Malcolm Alker who is retiring and joining the coaching set-up at the Reds. Malcolm was presented with a special painting as well as the Rugby League Express Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented by Editor Martyn Sadler.

Shop Until Your Mouse Hand Drops

September 13, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds today launch their new online shop in readiness for the arrival of the 2011 range of merchandise. Over the coming weeks and months new products from Kooga, as well as an exclusive range of Willows memorabilia to celebrate our last season at our famous old home, will be added, giving Reds fans the opportunity to do their Christmas shopping from the comfort of their own armchair.

Reds’ Paul McNally said: “Online retail has something we have always watched closely. We have never had a solution we were completely happy with or that was affordable. Now, with the Club on the cusp of a historic future, the time is right to launch a system that is easy to use and fans can simply log on, purchase and sit back and wait for their goods to arrive.

“We will now be able to do things such as take exclusive online pre-orders for the 2011 jersey. Our fans have asked for this kind of service so we look forward to the orders flooding in.”

Besides the more regular items such as clothing, gifts will feature heavily with merchandise linked to the final year of The Willows.

“We’ve had well over one hundred years of history here and people are going to want to keep a piece of that history in their homes when we move. This place means a lot of things to a lot of people so the chance to own a part of this history of rugby league in Salford is going to be attractive,” he concluded.
