August 31, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds have beaten other Super League opposition to the signature of Phil Bailey from Wigan Warriors to secure a two-year deal for the former State of Origin star.

30-year-old Phil joined Wigan Warriors in 2007 from the Cronulla Club in the NRL and during his four years with the Sharks he made over 100 appearances scoring 32 tries. Has also played for both Manly and the Northern Eagles but now joins the Reds unprecedented recruitment drive.

He will now become the seventh new face at The Willows for the final season as the Reds revamp before they move into their new home at Barton.

Feka Next On Board In Reds’ Recruitment Drive

August 31, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds continued their impressive recruitment for 2011 and beyond by announcing the capture of Iafeta Palea’asina from Wigan Warriors. The barnstorming prop has signed a three-year deal a fortnight ago, but confirmation of the signing can only just be reported.

Feka is the next in a procession of quality signings following Luke Patten, Chris Nero, Stephen Wild, Tevita Leo-Latu and Vinnie Anderson to The Willows for the final season, before upping sticks and heading across the City to the Reds’ new home adjacent to The Trafford Centre.

28-year-old Auckland born Feka started off with the Auckland Warriors before arriving at these shores as a stellar-signing for the Wigan Warriors.

The impact forward will now arrive at The Willows in the close-season with ex-Wigan team-mate, former State of Origin star Phil Bailey in a double-deal that will further revamp the Reds’ squad for the final season at The Willows.

The Reds’ beat off a host of clubs eager to sign the giant Samoan and will add him and Bailey to their impressive ranks for next term. Feka told us: “I’m really looking forward to joining Salford. I know some of the other guys who are coming such as Tevita Leo-Latu and Vinnie Anderson really well and we’re all talking about next season and we’re pretty excited about getting Salford up where they should be.

“The Reds have struggled this season because of injuries and that can happen. Next season though I think we’ll have a bit more depth and we’ll certainly be a different proposition.”

Young Reds Outgunned By On-Fire Giants

August 22, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

With no less than eight first-teamers missing for this clash at The Galpharm, it was never going to be easy for a Salford side liberally sprinkled with Academy products, especially with the Giants eyeing the a potential shock Grand Final appearance in just over a months time. That said, there was certainly no sentiment from the Yorkshiremen, who the Reds beat at The Willows earlier in the season, led admirable by Stephen Wild, who will be joining Salford next season. The Giants led 52-0 until the last play of the game saw Jodie Broughton beat the whitewash, touching down after the hooter had sounded. Not a day that young Toby Adamson – brother of Luke, will want to remember as his firts team debut.

Match Report

Giants loose forward Stephen Wild showed his class against his future employers as the play-off contenders sealed a fourth straight win.

Wild, who is to join the City Reds on a three-year deal from next season, went over under the posts from Andy Raleigh’s final pass on 27 minutes.

Salford had conceded more than 100 points in their recent defeats by Crusaders and Hull KR and they shipped another half-century as the Giants ran in nine tries and scored eight goals against their weakened opponents.

Former Wakefield hooker Danny Brough started the scoring with a brilliant solo effort only six minutes into the contest.

Brough’s pace carried him past two attempted tackles but when he was held up by a third challenger he somehow wriggled free and burst for the line.

Wild’s effort prompted a spell of pressure in which Raleigh and Luke Robinson went close before New Zealand World Cup winner David Fa’alogo dived over from Leroy Cudjoe’s rollback on 32 minutes.

Skipper Brett Hodgson kicked two conversions to leave the Giants 16-0 up at the break.

The Giants then scored three tries in eight minutes early in the second half to kill the contest.

David Faiumu, Kevin Brown and Larne Patrick all scored converted tries.

A second touchdown from Faiumu, one from Lee Gilmour and another from Graeme Horne brought up the half-century in style.

Salford spent most of the game pinned in their own half such was the intensity of Huddersfield’s contest pressing.

A rare forage forward midway through the second half saw playmaker Matty Smith dive over, but the consolation effort was ruled out by a touch judge for a forward pass.

The City Reds did though finally get on the scoresheet in overtime when Jodie Broughton went over in the corner after the final hooter had already gone. The effort was allowed to stand but Steven Tyrer missed with the conversion.

Reds New Home Given Council Go Ahead

August 19, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Councillors have given the go ahead for a £26 million community stadium at Barton. Salford City Council has formed a joint venture company with Peel to develop and deliver the stadium – the largest single investment in sport in the city for decades.

It will be a centre for a range of community activities and also home to Salford City Reds, who will play there with a licence to use it.

It is to be built in time for the start of the 2012 rugby Super League season and work to prepare the land for development has already started on site.

Salford City Council today approved the plans which show a maximum capacity of 20,000, built-in offices, player facilities, hospitality boxes, concessions and community resources.

There will be two community outdoor sports pitches – one grass and one artificial pitch – and a new access route to the stadium via Liverpool Road.

An outline application for around 21,000 square metres of non-food retail, which will help to fund the development, was also approved in principle as part of the proposals.

The Secretary of State will now be asked to formally approve the plans. The Secretary of State has previously approved the principle of a 20,000 capacity stadium and retail on this site.

Development of the stadium will be phased with retail units added later.

Construction of the new stadium is expected to start in November.

Once the stadium is built it will be managed by the council-Peel joint venture company.

Super League, Super Supplements

August 17, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Reds’ star, Luke Adamson is no stranger to healthy eating and the second rower has taken on the role of ‘engage with your health’ ambassador this season, encouraging Reds’ supporters to take proactive steps to look after their health and well being.

However a demanding training schedule calls for players to take additional supplements to achieve the build and stamina to keep them healthy and fit throughout the season and Luke works closely with Reds first team strength and conditioning coach Andy Haigh to keep his body in peak condition.

“Nutrition is clearly a very important part of a rugby player’s armoury,” said Luke Adamson.

“Once the season is underway and we are playing and training intensively we often find there is a need for sports supplements to make sure our bodies are not lacking in essential nutrients.”

Salford City Reds players have been using CNP Professional’s sports supplements as part of their structured training programme. They have selected three products: Pro Fuel – a complex carbohydrate blend that is easily digested to guard against carb depletion, Pro Recover – a post workout recovery drink high in both protein and carbohydrate, helping limit muscle damage and aiding recovery, and Pro Mass – a high quality blend of fast and slow acting proteins that helps with gaining lean muscle mass.

“I like the no frills approach of CNP,” says Andy Haigh. “Their products do the job. They are targeted to specific requirements and so I know exactly what the players are getting and what results to expect.

“The players use Pro Recover post training, post gym sessions and post match. It definitely helps them recover quicker,” adds Haigh. “It means they can get back to training sooner and so keep up the levels of strength and fitness they have built throughout the season.”
For the younger players who need to put on muscle mass when moving into the professional rugby environment Haigh suggests they use CNP’s Pro Mass. Some players can lose weight during the stresses of a season but Pro Mass helps them maintain their optimum weight while encouraging the growth of lean muscle.

“Some of the players have put on as much as 6kg when using a combination of Pro Mass and a specially designed diet,” says Haigh. “They really enjoy it as well. It doesn’t go lumpy or chalky like some do and it tastes great – especially the strawberry flavour.

“To make sure the players can keep up their energy levels during training sessions we use Pro Fuel. It’s probably the best dissolving mix around. We use it pre-, post- and during all sessions.”
