“As we currently prepare them for life in the rugby world we are certainly preparing them for life in the real world.”

Reds Disappointed As Cas Bounce Back
April 25, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds completed a tough week on and off the field with a largely disappointed display during a 30-12 defeat at The Jungle. Although only trailing 16-12 going into the last quarter, Castleford Tigers eased away to a relatively comfortable win in the end.
Match Report
Castleford halted their slump to move two points clear of fellow engage Super League strugglers Salford with a 30-12 victory at The Jungle.
The Tigers, who had lost five of their previous six home games this season including last week’s Challenge Cup tie against Barrow, ground out a vital win in a scrappy game.
Joe Westerman was a major contributor with seven goals from seven kicks.
The Tigers welcomed back Australian scrum-half Brent Sherwin for his 50th appearance and prop Liam Higgins, who both missed the defeat against Barrow because of shoulder injuries.
Salford recalled winger Steve Tyrer in place of Jodie Broughton, sidelined after aggravating a shoulder injury.
The Reds survived an early onslaught after they were caught napping when the ball went into touch from Castleford’s kick off.
With half-backs Rangi Chase and Sherwin dictating play, the Tigers continued to make the running. And it was no surprise when they took a sixth-minute lead as slick handling by Chase and Sherwin made the opening for Ryan McGoldrick to glide through for a try that Joe Westerman converted.
Castleford survived a let-off two minutes later when Sherwin slipped as he attempted to put in a clearance kick, but Salford’s Ray Cashmere failed to gather the loose ball when the Reds had an overlap and a try was on the cards.
Salford were their own worst enemies as they gifted their opponents possession by losing the ball in their own half but the Tigers failed to capitalise and were also guilty of handling errors as the game became increasingly scrappy in the wet conditions.
Salford’s Stefan Ratchford made a promising half-break but the move fizzled out when he lost his footing.
Castleford dominated territory and missed a chance to increase their lead when Westerman was unable to hold McGoldrick’s pass near the try line.
Westerman then kicked a 30th-minute goal after Salford’s Ratchford was penalised for impeding Stuart Jones as he attempted to chase a charged-down kick.
Three minutes later, the Tigers loose-forward was on target again to make it 10-0 after the Reds were penalised for interference at a play the ball.
Salford hit back on the stroke of half-time after Chase lost the ball near his own posts, Daniel Holdsworth’s clever chip-kick setting up a try for Ashley Gibson that Holdsworth converted to reduce the deficit to four points.
Castleford pressed strongly at the start of the second half and increased their lead when Ryan Hudson’s deft pass sent Aussie prop Mitchell Sargent plunging over for a 54th-minute touchdown that Westerman converted.
Salford struck back nine minutes later when Gibson’s crossfield kick led to Mark Henry scoring and Holdsworth added the extras to cut the gap to 16-12.
Just when the Tigers looked to be wobbling, they were given a huge lift when young full-back Jordan Thompson scored from Chase’s well-placed kick and Westerman converted.
They sealed victory two minutes from time when Sherwin’s kick set up a try for Stuart Jones and Westerman added his seventh goal.

Bomber Urges Fans To Have A Magic Blast
April 22, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Shaun McRae is hoping Engage Super League’s most loyal fans follow the Reds all the way to Murrayfield when Salford face Warrington Wolves on Magic Weekend in Edinburgh on Saturday May 1.
Tickets for the day start at just £20 (£10 concessions), full weekend tickets start at only £30 (£15 concessions) and with Salford season-ticket holders eligible for a 50 per cent discount, McRae is looking forward to seeing as many Reds fans at Murrayfield as possible.
“What a superb occasion it is for the true Rugby League supporter,” said Bomber. “It is great value for them being able to watch supreme athletes at a showcase venue in such a historical city.
“How many other sports allow fans to watch seven games in two days at such a bargain price?
“We will be doing our best to help the Salford fans enjoy the occasion even more!”
Salford will be keen to erase memories of a 24-16 defeat to Harlequins last year at Murrayfield, but McRae is wary of a Warrington side who are just four points off top spot in the Engage Super League.
McRae said: “Warrington have every opportunity to win another trophy this year. I think they are that good.
“It’s a tough draw for us but we were behind only 14-2 after an hour in the Super League fixture last month and the final scoreline was not a true indication.
“We played very well for the first hour but then Warrington’s touches of brilliance took over.”
The Magic Weekend clash will see the return of former scrum-half Richie Myler but McRae insists that he hasn’t got a problem with the England international despite the way in which the transfer was done.
“There is no ill-feeling towards Richie. I have never had a problem with a player moving on if he thought it was in his best interests,” he said.
“The length and size of contract we offered showed how much we valued him but at the end of the day Richie had to make the call.
“The only thing that caused us any problem was the manner in which it was done.”
Tickets for Magic Weekend are available from the club ticket office on 0161 736 6564.

Handy Man Parker On Comeback Trail
April 20, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds’ star Rob Parker has seen enough fracture clinics in the last 12 months to last him a lifetime. Having missed the last 12 games of the 2009 season with a skull fractured in five places, Parker returned to the Reds’ line-up at the start of this season only to badly break his hand, live on Sky Sports, in the victory against Hull FC.
“I knew it was bad as soon as I did it. Not only did I hear it crack, Malcolm (Alker) and Fitzy heard it crack too. I’ve seen it back on video and it’s not nice.
Not only did I hear it crack, Malcolm (Alker) and Fitzy heard it crack too
“I basically broke my third and fourth metacarpals, but in more than one place, so that’s why it needed two plates and eight screws inserting. I already have two plates in my cheekbone!”
So while Rob is obviously going to be no friend of airport metal detectors anymore he is already eyeing up his return to the Engage Super League.
“I’m hoping to be back in about four weeks. I’m having regular Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment at Physio2 in Walkden. It’s been really good and the oxygen certainly helps. I used it before when I broke my arm when I was at Warrington and already the swelling and bruising has gone down quicker than if I wasn’t getting the treatment.
“If it can get me back a week earlier it will be worthwhile. I was in a lot of pain after the operation and the morphine didn’t help so I ended up having a needle in my armpit while they tried to find the nerve that was carrying the pain so you could say it wasn’t pleasant, but that’s all behind me now and I’m looking forward to getting back into action.”
Reds’ Fan Takes On London Marathon
April 20, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds players are supporting lifelong Reds’ supporter Emma Johnson as she heads to the Capital this weekend to run the London Marathon on Sunday.
Raising funds for Help for Heroes, Emma has been training ridiculously hard for the event and will be running in memory of her uncle WOII Philip Cross of the Royal Army Medical Corps, who was sadly killed in an explosion in Northern Ireland in 1991.
“My uncle was a great inspiration to me and I have always wanted to do something in his memory,” said Emma.
“When I gained a place in this year’s Marathon it seemed like the perfect opportunity and I’m hoping to raise as much money as possible for the heroes fighting for our country today.”

Nightmare Trip Costs Reds Dear
April 18, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford’s arduous 24-hour overland trip to the south of France was all in vain as they crashed out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup at the first hurdle.
The Reds were forced to travel to Perpignan by coach and ferry after their flight plans were thrown into disarray by the volcanic ash that closed airports across northern Europe.
They made a poor start to their fourth-round tie at Gilbert Brutus Stadium and never recovered as winger Frederic Vaccari marked his Cup debut with a brace of tries.
Veteran prop forward Jerome Guisset opened the scoring with a 10th-minute try and Vaccari, who only made his Super League debut earlier this month, scored his first to put the Dragons into a 10-0 lead after only 13 minutes.
Salford’s hopes were raised by two quick-fire tries from winger Jodie Broughton just before half-time but Daniel Holdsworth was unable to add the conversions as the home side clung to a 10-8 interval lead.
Centre Steven Bell extended the Catalans’ lead six minutes into the second half, with Thomas Bosc kicking a second goal to make it 16-10, and there was no way back for Shaun McRae’s men when stand-off Casey McGuire went over for a fourth try on 57 minutes.
Even without suspended duo Chris Walker and Dallas Johnson, the Dragons were too good for their visitors and prop Remi Casty sealed the victory with a late try, with Gregory Mounis this time adding the conversion.
Catalans’ reward is a trip to Crusaders in the fifth round next month.
