Parker Set For Lengthy Lay-Off With Broken Hand
March 28, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
City Reds star Rob Parker is set for a further injury lay-off after breaking his hand falling awkwardly in a tackle during the Reds’ magnificent victory over Hull FC yesterday. Until last season Parker had never missed any considerable period through injury but this latest news will come as a blow to the Reds’ vice captain, having missed half of last season with a skull fracture.
Parker left the field clearly in pain and the view of the medical staff on scene that he had suffered a break was confirmed on Sunday morning by X-Ray.
Rob has been referred to a surgeon on Tuesday so it is our thoughts that they obviously believe he is going to need an operation
Head Coach Shaun McRae said:” It’s obviously a blow after all the good things that came from yesterday’s performance. Rob has been referred to a surgeon on Tuesday so it is our thoughts that they obviously believe he is going to need an operation. There are some breaks you can play with but this certainly isn’t one of those and Rob is likely to be missing for a few weeks if not longer. We’ll know more by the middle of the next week after his consultation.”
Meanwhile, the news is better for Luke Adamson who had to withdraw with a lower limb injury below his knee just before half time, causing considerable concern.
“Luke has presented his injury this morning and it’s much better than we first feared and he should be in contention for the Easter fixtures.
Stunning Reds Performance Shocks Hull
Salford City Reds bagged their second win of the season over in-form Hull FC with a breathtaking performance in a Super League thriller. Jodie Broughton and Karl Fitzpatrick each struck at the double to prevent Hull climbing to third place in the Engage Super League.
It was an outstanding show by the Reds who snatched only their second win of the season with Daniel Holdsworth in top form.
Salford, with only one win in seven matches, welcomed back former Kiwi international Willie Talau in the centre and dropped Stefan Ratchford.
They were still without suspended scrum half Jeremy Smith with Hull’s 17-year-old winger Reece Lyne making a try-scoring debut.
Hull were missing Richard Horne, Mark Calderwood and Peter Cusack as they sought their sixth victory in eight games.
Hull made a poor start with Craig Fitzgibbon spilling a pass and then a penalty allowing Holdsworth to send Adam Sidlow stretching over for a third minute try.
Holdsworth added the conversion to stun Hull’s travelling army of fans.
Hull were back on level terms after 14 minutes with Sean Long’s kick rebounding off a Reds defender for the former St Helens scrum half to touch down for his third try since his close-season move and Danny Tickle goaled.
Fitzgibbon’s dropped ball gave Salford the chance to snatch a 90 metre try with Holdsworth putting Steve Tyrer clear and the winger’s kick bounced off Lyne for Fitzpatrick to score to make it 12-6.
It was certainly a far more confident Salford performance until Stuart Littler’s high tackle allowed Kirk Yeaman to outjump two defenders from Long’s kick to cut the deficit to two points.
Salford had a let off with video referee Steve Ganson ruling out Willie Manu’s try from Long’s pass for a clear obstruction by Yeaman.
But Hull went ahead for the first time with Hame Lauaki’s strength taking him over with Tickle’s conversion edging them in front 16-12 at the break.
Salford equalised with Broughton crossing in the corner from Talau’s smart pass.
They went in front 20-16 when Holdsworth’s kick looked to be heading out of play until cleverly tapped back by Tyrer for Fitzpatrick to bag his second try.
Then Lyne celebrated his touchdown from Richard Whiting’s pass to level again on the hour.
The see-saw continued with Broughton’s second try, converted by Holdsworth off the touchline, making it 26-20 for the Reds.
Man-of-the-Match Talau’s tackle denied Whiting a try before Holdsworth weighed in with a last-gasp one pointer to seal the home win.

Talue Set To Power Back For Reds
March 27, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds have centre Willie Talau back this evening after he missed two matches with a calf strain, and second-rower Ian Sibbit comes into contention after being out for a fortnight with an ankle injury.
Hull FC are poised to give a debut to 17-year-old winger Reece Lyne in place of Mark Calderwood, who injured a hamstring in last week’s 18-6 win over Bradford Bulls.
Utility back Craig Hall returns but stand-off Richard Horne is still troubled by a rib injury. Tongan prop Sam Moa is set to make his second appearance of the season in place of the injured Peter Cusack.
Supporters are reminded that kick off is at the slightly unusual time of 5PM tonight (Saturday)

Leon’s Anniversary Passes
Salford City Reds today mark the first anniversary of the death of Leon Walker who collapsed and died during a reserve game for Wakefield Wildcats against Celtic Crusaders last March, at the age of just 20.
Leon had progressed through the Reds’ Academy ranks and spent three years at Salford before joining the Wildcats and was a remarkably popular figure around The Willows having been voted Academy U18 Players Player of the Year for 2007.
Lots of players wanted to pay their respects to Leon on this day and he is still in the thoughts of friends he met at the club
The Reds under 20’s team paid a visit to Leon’s grave in Morley before a Book of Condolence containing messages left on the Reds’ website was presented to the Walker family at the weekend.
Head of Reds Youth Development Alan Hunte said:
“Lots of players wanted to pay their respects to Leon on this day and he is still in the thoughts of friends he met at the club, as are his family who still feel the pain a year on as though it were yesterday.
“Leon was a popular member of the team and we will continue to support the family in any way we can.”
The Leon Walker Memorial Trophy is now presented annually at the Reds end of year presentations.
Wildcats Brush Past Reds With First Half Blitz

Wakefield made amends for their last showing on home soil by demolishing Salford 36-6 in their Engage Super League clash at Hearwell Stadium.
The Wildcats were dismantled 52-0 by local rivals Huddersfield in their last home Super League outing, but they were quickly out of the blocks here and 28 unanswered points in a brilliant first-half laid the platform for a deserved win while the City Reds could not follow up last week’s victory over Harlequins with another performance to match.
Daryl Millard, Tevita Leo-Latu, Glenn Morrison, Dale Ferguson and Aaron Murphy all crossed in the first-half with Sam Obst, who starred in Danny Brough’s notable absence, adding a try of his own and laying one on for Damien Blanch after the break.
The Wildcats forged ahead with six-and-half minutes gone. The ball was worked left on the last tackle and Jason Demetriou, under the tackle of two City Reds defenders, somehow off-loaded to Matt Blaymire who handed the supporting Millard the simple task of touching down.
Obst missed a difficult conversion but another try arrived in 10th minute, again on the last tackle.
The Wildcats pack forced their way to within a few metres of the Salford line and Leo-Latu scored a typical hookers try, burrowing over from close range. This time Obst was successful in adding the extras.
The hosts then posted an impressive third three minutes later. Forwards Richard Moore and Morrison were working really good combinations down the middle and it was the latter who powered his way through and had the presence of mind to stretch for the line.
Obst slotted the goal before some really poor Salford defence gifted the home side a fourth in the 18th minute.
It was Ferguson who took a short pass from Leo-Latu and managed to force his way over underneath the posts with several missed tackles aiding his cause.
Obst knocked over the conversion before Aaron Murphy crossed for another converted try on the half-hour mark.
The hosts opted to pass the ball at pace, Demetriou produced a clever step after receiving the ball from Obst, Blaymire linked in superbly and when it looked as though he might be tackled, the Wildcats full-back threw the ball wide for Murphy.
The hosts continued to enjoy themselves after the break and with just four second-half minutes gone Obst raced in.
The try came when a Morrison off-load had Damien Blanch scampering down the right. He was momentarily halted but he got to he feet and sent Obst, who failed with the goal, over the line.
Salford did improve and managed to stem the flow but the Wildcats pack were completely dominant and ran their opposition into the ground.
Paul Cooke’s introduction in the 33rd minute had little impact and the Reds finally posted some points of their own with 17 minutes remaining.
It came from what was virtually their first attack of the game. They opened the Wildcats up on the left and it was Luke Swain with the pass which sent Stuart Littler over for a try converted by Stefan Ratchford.
Obst capped a fine display when producing a beautifully-weighted kick which Blanch, who showed a great turn of pace, managed to touch down.

Cashmere On Verge Of Comeback
March 19, 2010 by Paul Mc · 2 Comments
Salford City Reds are boosted for their visit to Wakefield Wildcats by the return of Aussie powerhouse Ray Cashmere after a four-match absence through injury.
Razor’s return coincides with the Reds’ hunt for a second consecutive win, having got off the mark with last weekend’s victory at Harlequins. Stefan Ratchford is also in line for a return following the two-match suspension handed out to Kiwi Jeremy Smith last Tuesday for an illegal forearm tackle.
Meanwhile, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have listened to the fans’ feedback from their match-day experience at the Hearwell Stadium and they have increased the amount of bar facilities available to spectators when they come to Engage Super League at the stadium.
From this week’s home game against the Reds, the Neil Fox Bar in the Cats Building will be open to the fans before the match. The bar will be closed shortly before the kick off when fans will be able to gain access to the stadium through the turnstiles.
During and after the game the Neil Fox bar will be available to fans but it will be restricted to people from inside the stadium.
Francis Stephenson, the Wildcats’ General Manager, said: “This development is something that we’re trialling after hearing what the fans have said about their match-day experience at the Hearwell Stadium.
“We’ll be seeking some further feedback from the fans once the bar has been working under its new conditions for a while.”

Reds Back Sport Relief Weekend
March 19, 2010 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds kicked off their efforts for Sport Relief with a unique challenge at the Total Fitness Gym in Walkden today, throwing down the gauntlet to Total Fitness members in a rowing, cycling and circuits contest.
Reds players Stefan Ratchford, Jack Spencer, Lewis Palfrey, Ben Wood and Mark Sneyd all completed the disciplines with Lewis completing in the
fastest time of 5 minutes and 49 seconds - the ultimate winner will be the competitor who gets closest to, or surpasses, their times.
All of the challengers will have to make a £1 donation to Sport Relief.
The challenge is open to all Salford residents this weekend 19 – 21 March who fancy their chances against the Reds and you do not have to be a Total Fitness Gym Member to participate. Call the gym reception on 0161 702 8222 for further details.
The challenge at Total Fitness – the Reds Training Facilities Sponsor – is not being taken lightly by the staff there.
Sales manager Chris Ganner said:
“The members here will be out to show how fit they are against the might of Salford City Reds. Let’s face it, they’re up against top professionals, but they’ll give it their best shot. And if it helps Sport Relief, all the better.”
If you are not able to take up the Sport Relief Challenge there are plenty of other ways in which you can get involved in Sport Relief.
Reds’ player Stefan Ratchford is urging Salford City Reds fans who to sign up to a Sport Relief Run in your area:
“Sport Relief is a great campaign and raises millions of pounds for some really good causes. The event on Sunday 21 March starts at 10.00am so any of our supporters who do take part will have plenty of take to complete the challenge before attending our away game against Wakefield,” he said.
“It would be superb to see Salford fans taking to the streets of Manchester and helping raise more money.”
Thousands of people are expected to take part in the event which will see runners passing the Rovers Return, Dev’s Corner Ship and Ken and Deirdre’s front door – all key landmarks on the cobbles of Coronation Street.
With three distances to choose from – 1, 3 or 6 miles – there’s something for everyone on the day. Toddlers can do 1 mile with their parents or teenagers can race 3 miles against their friends and the most athletic can take on a 6 mile challenge.
“The good thing about the Mile event is that the whole family can take part as the distances vary from 1 to 6 miles. It’s an excellent opportunity to raise money for charity whilst getting active and staying fit.” Rob concluded.
Funds raised from Sport Relief 2010 will help tackle three main issues – children who live on the streets or work in dangerous conditions, people affected by malaria and local UK projects.
In addition to the Mile events around the country, seven celebrities including David Walliams, Jimmy Carr, Davina McCall and Fearne Cotton are aiming to raise £1 million by cycling non-stop for approximately 80 hours from John O’Groats to Land’s End – a distance of 1,000 miles.
Comedian Eddie Izzard has already completed his challenge by running 43 marathons in 51 days around the UK, a total distance of 1,160 miles.
To sign up for the Sport Relief Mile in Manchester City Centre on Sunday 21 March please visit www.sportrelief.com
Smith Gets Two Match Suspension
Salford City Reds’ Jeremy Smith has been banned for two games and fined £300 after being found guilty of striking with the forearm during last weekend’s win at Harlequins. Kiwi Smith was sin-binned during the game for the foul on Quins Danny Orr and was called before the RFL Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday evening, where the Panel decided the incident warranted a ban.
Smith will now miss the Reds’ trip to Wakefield Wildcats this Sunday and the televised game against Hull FC at The Willows the week after.
