Broughton Makes Salford Switch
December 17, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds can confirm the capture of Leeds Rhinos’ Jodie Broughton for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The powerhouse 21-year old three-quarter signed for the Rhinos Academy in 2006 where he excelled before eventually signing for Hull FC in two separate loan stints, scoring four tries in 10 appearances for the Airlie Birds.
Jodie is an exciting player and we are hoping for big things from him. He has bags of pace and has come through a good system and gained Super League experience in the process
Reds’ Director of Football Steve Simms said: “Jodie is an exciting player and we are hoping for big things from him. He has bags of pace and has come through a good system and gained Super League experience in the process. He’s signed a two year deal with us so this is his big chance to show the Reds’ fans what he can do. ”
Broughton is yet another example of the exciting young talent the Reds have been hoovering up in the close-season and he will wear the number 2 jersey during Super League XV.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas
December 11, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds kicked off the Christmas festivities this week with the Salford City Reds junior fans joined players at the annual Junior Reds Christmas Party last night (Thursday) and the production of Aladdin at the Willows earlier in the week.
As ever the Christmas party went down a storm with the junior supporters, as the evening took on a tropical feel with both players and supporters learning to limbo – we think big Phil Leuluai has been practicing his moves – but he was in good spitits after his panto debut earlier in the week along with fellow Red, Adam sidlow.
Santa made a guest appearance with elves in tow to hand out goodies to all the children – special thanks to him for dropping in – and thanks to the players who were all more than willing to take to the floor for fun and games.
Meanwhile three of the junior Reds have won the members weekly draw in recent weeks.
Congratulations to Chloe Morris, Gemma Wagstaffe and Olivia Williams, who all receive a 2010 home shirt signed by their favourite player.
The Merriest of Christmas to all our Reds Supporters.

‘Ice’ Time For Red Giants
December 3, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Players from two of the northwest’s sporting giants have enjoyed a unique training session on the region’s newest skating concept.
Stars from Salford City Reds and Manchester Pheonix Ice Hockey Club were put through their paces at the new Trafford Centre ‘eco-ice’ rink.
The technology behind the ‘eco-ice rink’ was unveiled to rave reviews at New York’s Museum of Natural History last year, and the company behind the new rink WonderIce UK have already received official endorsement from the National Hockey League of Canada.
And it was a hearty thumbs up on this side of the Atlantic as well – from two teams more used to cold ice and wet pitches.
Gregg Wood of The Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club, one of the quickest forwards in the Premiership said: “I’m led to believe that the secret of this revolutionary new rink is the fact it is one of the first artificial pads to have silicone impregnated within the material that provides the surface to skate upon. It was a pleasure to try out.”
Reds Vice captain Rob Parker said: “Cross-training is a great way to improve fitness, and building up speed on the eco-rink was certainly a good work-out for sportsmen who have to be at their best. Perhaps we’ll see more rugby players taking to the rink as part of their fitness regime.”
The eco-friendly rink is actually an artificial surface that is specially engineered to match the density of frozen water. Skaters glide on metal blades which provide a smooth movement perfect for beginners and experienced skaters alike.
Said Michelle Wilden of WonderIce: “This kind of rink is brand new to the UK, and we are over the moon to have sportsmen of this calibre test it out. We are over the moon they like it – and they have an open invitation to come back for more training.
“Pheonix are professionals on real ice, so their knowledge of how ice works and what it feels like to skate on is second to none. We couldn’t think of a better team to test eco-ice. We believe eco-ice is the rink of the future, so it’s been a pleasure introducing Pheonix to the concept and seeing them use their incredible skills on our rink.
“Meanwhile, Salford City Reds are known as superb athletes – and yet ice skating doesn’t feature on their usual training programme! The physical effort required to skate means it’s a great work-out for the glutes and quads – and who better to put that to the test than Manchester’s premier rugby club?
Bringing these two teams together is a unique chance to see how teams from two popular sports react to the eco-ice. We assured the players there would be no cold knees or bums on our ‘ice’, which went down well!”
Director of operations at the Centre Gordon McKinnon said: “We are very proud of our new eco-ice rink, and it’s very much in keeping with our aim to reduce our impact on the environment.
“Other shopping destinations might accept the old fashioned cold ice, but we try to stay one step ahead of the competition by looking at new, greener technologies like this.
“Christmas is a magical time of year for all the family at The Trafford Centre, and what could be more festive than wrapping up warm and taking to a skating rink? Whether you are 4 or 94, you can enjoy our rink by going at a speed that suits you. And after today’s training session, you know you are in good company when you try out our eco-rink.”
The eco-ice rink at Barton Square has dedicated free parking, and is open from 12noon until late every day until Christmas.
