Reds’ stalwart Captain Malcolm Alker will join the Reds’ backroom staff for the 2010 season as he casts an eye towards the end of his playing career.

Alker was officially unveiled as an assisstant coach today and will continue on with his playing duties as the Reds’ look to bring through a young team of British talent for the 2010 season.

I’m no fool. I know that I cannot continue playing for ever and I am looking to end my career on a high

Director of Football Steve Simms said: “Malcolm is at the start of a new journey with the club. He is a fearsome and respected player on the field but he knows that he cannot play for ever. His stature in the club is such that it seems obvious that coaching would be the next step in his career. He has all the ability to become a great coach and this next season, with him on the coaching staff as well as the field, will enable both ourselves, and indeed Malcolm to assess whether he has the ability to become a Head Coach.”

Alker meanwhile is chomping at the bit to take up his new duties: “I’m no fool. I know that I cannot continue playing for ever and I am looking to end my career on a high. Coaching will be a new challenge for me and I know that I will have to learn to combine it with playing the game this season. I know I have to do what is right and best for the team and I have a fantastic opportunity to sell myself to the Club.

I still have to go out there and deliver on the pitch and I will have to find the right formula. It may be difficult with split loyalties between the players and the coaches but I am really confident I can make a great go of it. I’m really looking forward to getting back in next month and getting to work.”

Memberships and season tickets for the Reds’ 2010 campaign are on sale now and you can save huge amounts for you and your family by signing up early.

Nearly 100 youngsters from schools and community Rugby League clubs in Salford and Manchester will get the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet members of the England Rugby League team this Tuesday at a training session in Manchester.

In preparation for their key Gillette Four Nations fixture against Australia next Saturday (October 31) at Wigan’s DW Stadium, England are training in Manchester.  Along with Salford City Reds Foundation they have invited pupils from St Peters RC High School and Wright Robinson High School along with players from Manchester Storm and Manchester St Peters community clubs to see how the side gets ready for a major international fixture.

The youngsters aged between 11 and 14 will watch the England team train, get autographs and have their pictures taken with the likes of team captain Jamie Peacock, Adrian Morley and Richie Myler.

Phil Williams, the RFL’s Marketing Manager, said: “This is great opportunity for some local youngsters to meet some of the best players in the world as they get ready for the biggest game of the tournament so far – England v Australia.”

Jim Dixon, Deputy Head at St Peters RC High School, said: “St Peters RC High School are delighted to be partnering Salford City Reds as we continue to develop Rugby League in Manchester and events like this certainly help.

“The sport has made giant strides in the last three years, with more Manchester specific development staff and the development of a Rugby League hub site at St Peters in the pipeline.  To be invited along to an England training session will certainly last long in the memory of all those attending.”

Mark Brocklehurst, Salford City Reds Foundation Community & Business Development Manager, said: “Salford City Reds Foundation has been working extremely hard to establish a solid base for Rugby League within the City of Manchester over the last three years.

“For the first time schools are regularly playing the sport, sustainable community clubs exist and public and private partnerships are flourishing. It’s a fantastic reward for some of the city’s players, coaches and volunteers to watch England’s Four Nations squad prepare.”

Tickets for the Gillette Four Nations match between England and Australia at Wigan’s DW Stadium on Saturday October 31 are available from £20, and £10 for concessions.  To purchase tickets, please call 0844 856 11 13 or visit www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk

Salford Van Hire Driving Reds Forward

October 16, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds are pleased to confirm the continued support and sponsorship of Salford Van Hire for the 2010 season, with the company logo once again featuring prominently on the front of the new playing strip.

One of the UK’s leading vehicle rental companies for over four decades, Salford Van Hire are renowned for the exceptional quality and value of their self-drive van and car hire service, making their orange trucks and vans a regular site on the nation’s roads and motorways.

Salford Van Hire Company Chairman, Raffaello Bacci said

“Salford Van Hire’s involvement with Salford City Reds and having our national brand name associated with the club in the top flight of Super League is very exciting.

“The future of the club going forward, the plans for the new stadium and a young team coming together on the field, establishing itself in the Super League will put Salford and the city firmly on the map”

Now entering into a fourth Season of sponsorship with Salford City Reds, Salford Van Hire is a great asset to the club and their support invaluable as Reds CEO, David Tarry highlighted:

“Salford Van Hire and the City’s Rugby League Club have been proudly flying the flag for Salford on a National and International stage independently for many, many years.

“It has been a great opportunity to bring the two organisations together in this partnership, with the aim of taking Salford forward. We as a Club express great values of pride in who we are and where we are from, and working together with Salford Van Hire it has become clear that Mr Bacci holds those same values.

“Indeed it is a great testament to those values that they continue to support us at this level through such difficult times for the business community and we thank them for that.”
