Cashmere: We Need to Put The Starch Back In
July 2, 2009 by Paul Mc
Salford City Reds battle-hardened Aussie prop-forward Ray Cashmere knows exactly what needs to be done to stop the St Helens winning machine that arrives at The Willows this Friday evening.
“We need to get back to basics to be honest,” said the popular Cashmere, “In places last week it was embarrassing the way Huddersfield broke us down the middle. We need to put the starch back in and compete.”
“We had a couple of confusions in communication but a lot of the performance was down to attitude and we have to fix that. Having said that, I think the Giants had the best front row I’ve come up against all year,” he continued.
“We’re really going to have to get our wits about us with players like James Graham and James Roby coming at us but they have a few big names missing too in Cunningham and Gidley.”
“We’re looking to play the game the way we want to at our pace. We have had a few of the younger guys in the set-up lately like Ziggy (Adam Sidlow) and Jay Walton and you try to have a little word with them here and there and give them a little advice but they’ve been handling things pretty well to be fair.”
“We’ve had some big blows with injuries but you don’t like to use that as an excuse. Willie Talau has been a big miss. He’s very imposing in the centre and Rob Parker has been a workhorse, but every team gets injuries.”
And for Cashmere, now more than halfway into his first season in the engage Super League, is it what he expected?
“Yes, I think so. It’s probably on a par with the NRL although the talent is probably not spread as evenly. I’m generally pleased with my game, although most professional sportsmen will tell you if you make a couple of mistakes, it is those that stick in your mind rather than the good things you do.
“I’ve been getting more game time lately and that’s good. I’m not one to complain because the coaches have their rotation plan, but I certainly felt I had more game time in me and the last few weeks I’ve been out there far more so that’s good for me.”
And there will be no winter pilgrimage back Down Under for the Cashmere clan – Ray, Sarah and baby Charlie as they will front out the UK winter in style due to Sarah’s work commitments as a nurse.
“Next season I’m personally looking to improve my game further. We’re all settled, we like it here and I’ll be keen to see what we can do as a team and who we recruit,” he concluded.

I am really sick to the back teeth of reading from various players that ‘We need to put the starch in’ ..’we need to get off to a good start’… ‘we need to win the arm wrestle’…..we the suffering fans already know what you lot need to do and that is have a bit of pride in the shirt you wear, certainly didnt see it last week and I dont think it will be evident tonight and whilst on the subject of pride i dont know how anyone could go on Sky tv telling other coaches how to get the best from their teams when ones own squad is performing like a bunch of strangers…..am I banned again Paul?
