Catalans Dragons 38-6 Salford City Reds (eSL R10)
April 18, 2009 by Paul Mc
Catalans Dragons ran out comfortable 38-6 winners in the South of France when they took on the Reds in Round 10 of the engage Super League. The Reds had taken the lead early on after a nice move resulted in a Stefan Ratchford score on 12 minutes, but the Dragons were soon back in the game through Dimitri Pelo.
The video ref awarded a second Catalans try that mystified most watching the screens as the ball seemed to be clearly knocked on by Ferriol as he reached out to plant the ball over the line. The ball didn’t roll dead and the French touched down and the try was awarded, much to the amazement of the crowd and players.
From there on it was pretty much one-way traffic with the Reds unable to get any meaningful possession and they must now look to a week of recovery before taking on Hull FC at The Willows next Saturday evening.

Salford City Reds’ three-match winning streak came to an end when their leg-weary side crashed to an eight-try defeat in engage Super League to the Catalan Dragons in Perpignan.
The Reds made far too many errors and despite a gutsy defensive display they could not stop a Greg Bird-orchestrated Catalans side from rolling over them in the second half.
Catalans started strongly with the video referee ruling out a Tomas Bosc try in the second minute for a double movement after Dimitri Pelo had snapped up a spilled ball.
Salford took the lead on 12 minutes when young centre Jordan Turner put out a superb pass for Stefan Ratchford to cross in the corner.
John Wilshere goaled superbly from the touchline to extends the visitors’ advantage.
Catalans hit back six minutes later when former Wakefield forward Oliver Elima split the Salford defence to put Pelo in for a try which the home side failed to convert.
Both sides were looking tired after their Easter exertions but when David Ferriol spilled the ball under Stuart Littler’s tackle Remy Casty touched down and the video referee ruled a valid try.
The award was much to the displeasure of the Salford players and their mood was not improved as Bosc added the extras.
Salford were defending desperately as half-time approached and looked to have survived six sets on their own line before gifting Pelo his second try.
A defensive mix-up proved decisive as Richard Myler and new signing Daryl Goulding, who has joined on loan from Wigan, left a Bosc kick for each other and the French club capitalised for a 14-6 interval lead.
The second half was one-way traffic and a double strike from impressive centre Jean-Philippe Baile and a Bird conversion moved the Dragons out of sight.
Jerome Guissett, Kane Bentley and Steven Bell added further Dragons tries, much to the delight of their fans to leave Salford’s travelling support to face the journey home disappointed.

im sorry to say this but there was 2many mistakes i realey hate to say this but we all turning a bit into the old team and it was a bit of a joke i dont mind because we played alright but other people wont be
Normal service has been resumed, typical of Salford, why were they tired, they are ‘professional atheletes’
sorry to be saying this i dont want to call the players but i think after 3 fantastic wins these players should not have been beaten like that the manager making up excuses again that they were tired what about catalans they have played the same game same old salford same old problems i am sick of these type of scores sort it out fast shocking
Why are they tired? 4 games in 13 days and an 11 hour travel to the South of France?
No other professional sport does this…
How many other teams have looked jaded?
Warrington, Hudds, Wigan, Bradford, Leeds etc etc…
Maybe there is something in it after all…these blokes get smashed about week in week out…
Plus, Catalans are a very good side and won;t lose many more on their home patch this season.
yeh but they are tired as well
i dident go to the match but some people payed 200+pounds to get to the match maybe some dident but its still alot of money to see the reds lose at least we lost with pride intact
Every game played by the Catalans involves the same 11 hours travelling ,thats every single game not just the odd one,so to follow your reasoning Paul they should lose every away game game due to their tireness, (EDIT: swear again and posting right will be removed.) ,you are once again making excuses, but as I have said before they are your work collegues!!!! need I say any more.
You can understand players being tired after such a hectic schedule and, as mentioned by Paul, the trip to France is never the best preparation for a match but every rugby league player over the weekend must have been tired.
Despite the recent results, losing to Catalans is not the end of the world, its just the manner of the result thats upsetting. Most teams will take the trip over there and come out on the wrong side of the scoreboard so lets give the lads the benefit of the doubt. The best test will be our next home game. Lets see how they perform after a rest and infront of our typically vocal home supporters.
Both Wigan and Bradford conceeded more points than us there in recent weeks. I love the way there can be no concept that they are actually a very good team, finding form and playing ata very difficult place to get to.
Jacko – You were conspicuous by your absence in posting on match reports after Warrington and Leeds wins…:-)
I am not making excuses, I am putting forward possible reasons, which you simply don’t want to listen to. Promoted teams come into Super League, generally suffer a lot of heavy defeats and pull out some stunning wins in the process….
And of course Catalans were tired but I’d rather have had their three previous games of
Wigan (H)
Quins (A)
Bradford (H)
rather than our…
Hull (A)
Wolves (H)
Leeds (A)
followed by a trip to France.
Three out of four at home with no travelling. As opposed to our three out of 4 away. If you don;t think that would have an effect then fine…
well its annoying every game is away it gets a joke
