Cheggers to host Magic Weekend Highland Games
April 15, 2009 by Paul Mc
Following his successful appearance at last year’s Magic Weekend, TV celebrity Keith Chegwin is back for 2009 and will once again host the annual engage Super League Mascots Games on 2 and 3 May at Murrayfield.
This year mascots from all 14 engage Super League clubs will take part in a two day Highland Games, in association with Jet2, to fit in with the Scottish surroundings and events will include caber tossing and hunt the haggis!
Keith Chegwin said: “I really enjoyed last year’s event and cannot wait for the fun to start in Edinburgh. The family atmosphere is always brilliant at Rugby League events and I’m sure Edinburgh will provide the perfect backdrop for another superb weekend.
“Last year’s Mascot Games were very competitive with Ronnie the Rhino proving a worthy winner. Rumour has it though that the other mascots are even more determined to win this year and have spent months in the gym training!”
Chegwin became known for his work on BBC Radio 1 and his hugely popular kids series ‘Cheggers Plays Pop’. He has also presented TV shows such as ‘It’s a Knockout’ as well as ‘Cheggers Challenge’ for the BBC and can currently be heard daily on BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles show..
Phil Williams, RFL Marketing Manager said: “We are pleased to confirm Keith Chegwin will be returning for this year’s Magic Weekend after he proved a huge hit with supporters last season.
“His zany humour and personality is a fitting match for what is a fun and entertaining weekend for all the family to enjoy.”
engage Super League clubs have also backed the concept of the Magic Weekend and are expecting their fans to travel up in large numbers again.
Tony Colquitt, St Helens Chief Executive said: “The Magic Weekend is a great concept with seven superb matches alongside a great entertainment package with Cheggars the cherry on the top. Our fans flocked to Cardiff and I have no doubt with all the facilities and fun on offer at Murrayfield, they will do the same once more.”
Tickets for May’s engage Super League Magic Weekend are still available and prices for the seven game spectacular start from just £25. Season ticket holders at all engage Super League clubs are also entitled to a 50 per cent discount.
