Reds Move For Goulding
April 14, 2009 by Paul Mc
Salford City Reds have swooped to sign young prolific British try-scoring star Darrell Goulding from Wigan on loan.
21-year-old Goulding will go straight in to Head Coach Shaun McRae’s 19-man-squad travelling to Perpignon to play Catalans Dragons on Saturday.
Goulding had been linked with the Reds for over a week but the deal was finally completed on the night that Salford recorded their historic win against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
McRae said: “Darrell is an exciting young player who provides utility options in the outside backs. He is a specialist centre but can play out on the wings or at full-back.
“It is a great opportunity for Darrell to showcase his talents and ability and I’m looking for him to make an immediate impact.”
“Darrell will be travelling to France with us and will be named in the squad. I don’t bring in loan players to play in the reserves.
Goulding said: “It’s exciting to be joining a club on top form. I saw the results this weekend and was really surprised at the Leeds score. Things are going well here and I can’t wait to get into the thick of it. I know a few of the lads from Wigan such as Lee Jewitt and I played with Stef Ratchford when we were a lot younger. ”
“I was stuck in the reserves at Wigan so this will really give me the chance to show what I can do. I have international aspirations and this will hopefully allow me to push myself regularly at Super League level.
Goulding was a regular in Wigan’s squad last season and scored eight tries in 21 games and will be a further massive boost to the Reds line-up with morale already high.
He made his first team debut as a 17 year old at Widnes back in 2005 and figured in 8 starts in 2006 scoring one try.
Meanwhile Mark Henry has picked up a rib cartilage injury and will be rated as doubtful for the trip to Catalans.
We will have an exclusive video interview with Darrell Goulding later today.
