Leeds Rhinos 20-30 Salford City Reds (eSL R9)
April 13, 2009 by Paul Mc
Salford City Reds stunned Leeds Rhinos to record a third win in eight days and a first at Headingley since 1977. It was also the first time in the Super League era that the Reds have beaten Leeds home or away. Salford were never behind and ran out-20-30 winners after being the best team for the whole of the game.
It is in stark contrast to just two weeks ago with players and coaching staff coming under fire after a series of heavy defeats, but the patience seems to have paid off with the Reds now confounding critics who said they wouldn’t win another game all season.
Almost 15,000 people saw the Reds never fold under periods of pressure from the Yorkshiremen, while scoring tries from John Wilshere, Mark Henry, tennage sensation Richie Myler, veteran Kiwi Robbie Paul and a late interception from Jordan Turner to seal the win, when it looked as though the Super League Champions might come back for an underserved victory. John Wilshere was also on the mark with five kicks, including a crucial penalty when the Reds lead 10-22.

Jordan Turner’s interception try proved decisive as Salford overcame a second-half fightback to beat defending champions Leeds for the first time in Super League.
Second half tries by Ryan Hall, Keith Senior and Jamie Peacock threatened to foil the Reds who had built a 22-6 lead, but centre Turner took the visitors to a third successive win.
Boosted by victories over Hull and Warrington, Salford drew first blood, John Wilshere following up Jeremy Smith’s shrewd kick to touch down near the posts. Wilshere also added the extras.
More slack defending by the Rhinos then allowed Turner to send winger Mark Henry scampering in at the corner on the overlap as the Reds built a 10-point advantage in the opening 15 minutes.
Danny McGuire had a try disallowed for Leeds and Ryan Bailey lost possession on the line soon afterwards but Salford’s resistance finally cracked when Brent Webb cleverly changed the direction of play and Kevin Sinfield sent Jamie Jones-Buchanan galloping over to the right of the posts. Sinfield narrowed the gap to four points.
However, Leeds were victims of a controversial decision by referee James Child who failed to penalise Smith for holding back McGuire who had kicked to the corner and with the half-time hooter sounding, teenage half-back Richard Myler broke clear from his own half to score the Reds’ third try.
Wilshere’s goal made it 16-6 at the break.
Myler breached the Rhinos defence again with a clever kick for Robbie Paul to score under the posts with Leeds in disarray.
Webb and Senior carved out a try for winger Ryan Hall and Senior raised hopes with Leeds’ third try.
Peacock then barged his way over but Turner sprinted clear from his own half to seal Salford’s victory.
