Reds On Report With Youngsters
Students from Salford made the news last Thurday by taking part in a multi-media news day with the BBC and Salford City Reds players were put in the hot seat and interviewed by pupils from Buile Hill High School as part of the project.
Reds players, Mark Henry, Jason Walton and Jack Spencer were questioned about life in Super League and the current season, as part of BBC News School Report – a project which gives 11-14 year-old students in the UK the chance to make their own news reports.
Students from five local schools across Salford including Albion High School, St Ambrose Barlow RC High School, Oasis Academy, Buile Hill High School and Saint Patrick’s RC High School and Arts College, took over BBC Radio Manchester’s digital airwaves last Thursday (26 March) and having lined up the Reds, former Manchester City goalkeeper Alex Williams, and an historic costumed character from the Museum of Science and Industry, students broadcast their news reports throughout the day
Margaret Burgin, BBC News School Report Producer says:
“In just a couple of years the BBC is due to move into its new home at MediaCityUK in Salford. These students could be the journalists of the future.
“They’ve been learning all about how to gather news stories, research the stories which interest them, write and present their reports. So they’ve learnt really valuable skills and we hope they’ve had fun too!”
Flames Are UK Champions Once More
March 30, 2009 by Paul Mc · 3 Comments
Salford City Reds Cheerleaders have been in action over the weekend, with plenty of success stories to report the UKCA National Cheerleading Championships held at the Manchester Velodrome.
For the fourth year running the Red Hot Flames took first place in the Cheer Dance category with the Red Hot Sparklers also following suit in their age category, meanwhile the Mini Flames took first place in the Pom Dance Championships
With more than 2000 cheerleaders participating in the weekend event, the girls beat off stiff competition and showed skill, determination and teamwork, to make Coach Suzanne Roberts proud.
“The achievements and performance levels the girls delivered in the competition this year were once again breathtaking,” said Suzanne
“With more challenges on the horizon over the next few months, the girls have made a great start and the results are testament to their hard work and commitment.”
The Red Hot Flames and Sparklers have now been invited to represent the UK at the European Championships in Sweden in July; however the Flames will first travel to Florida where they will participate in the ICU World Championships in April.
Injury Woe As White’s Season Set To End
March 29, 2009 by Paul Mc · 6 Comments
Salford City Reds miserable weekend got worse with the news that winger Paul White could be set to miss the rest of the season after less than one full appearance this term. White, last season’s top scorer with 30 tries, played his first engage Super League game for the Reds today (Sunday) against Hull KR and scored in the first minute, but his knee gave way later on in the game and now Reds’ medical staff fear the worst for thespeedy Yorkshireman.
“I think we have seen the last of Paul White for the season but took a calculated risk on playing him. We had to find out if his knee would stand up. We suspect the knee has gone completely and may need reconstruction,” said Head Coach Shaun McRae after the 48-12 defeat at Craven Park.
Former Saints junior Dean McGilvray and England star Richie Myler also picked up injuries that mean that there will be a busy recovery session for the Salford backroom staff in the morning.

A vastly improved first half performance from the Reds saw them take much fancied Hull KR in level at the break 12-12 having lead since the first minute through a try from the returning Paul White, followed by a touchline conversion from Wilshere. Rovers actually out-scored the Reds by three tries to two in the period but John Wilshire’s more accurate kicking meant the game was tied at the half-way stage.
The second half was a completely different story though as Rovers’ Michael Dobson began to run the show and Hull KR took control before eventually running out comfortable winners at a canter, with the Reds unable to even find a single point after the break.
Match Report.
Salford gave Hull KR a fright with a try after just 64 seconds before the home side started the second half with three tries in 15 minutes to run out comfortable winners.
Winger Peter Fox and scrum-half Michael Dobson recorded hat-tricks as Rovers scored 36 unanswered points.
Salford’s Jordan Turner opened the scoring with just over a minute on the clock, going in at corner with John Wilshere converting.
It took Rovers 10 minutes to close the gap when Ben Galea and Kris Welham created an opening for Scott Murrell to force his way over for an unconverted try.
But the visitors belied their lowly league position when they made it 12-4 on 16 minutes, Luke Adamson being sent in by Craig Stapleton and Wilshere again adding the extras.
Fox’s first try on 20 minutes reduced the deficit and the same player forced his way over after good approach work by Ben Fisher and Galea to level the scores at 12-12 at the break.
It was Rovers’ turn to score early in the second half, Dobson and Galea combining to send in Dobson on 42 minutes.
Dobson converted his own score before Fox went in at the corner for his hat-trick try from Chas I’Anson’s long pass on 48 minutes with Dobson again adding the extras.
A defensive mix-up by Salford allowed Kris Welham to stroll in on 55 minutes with Dobson converting.
Ten minutes later Welham and I’Anson created an opening for Dobson to coast in and add the conversion to see Rovers 36-12 ahead.
Eight minutes before the end Salford spilled the ball and Dobson kicked ahead to touch down for his hat-trick try before adding the conversion.
In the last minute Welham jolted the ball loose in the tackle and picked up to touchdown.

Reds’ Try-Machine Back For Super League Bow
March 27, 2009 by Paul Mc · 3 Comments
Salford City Reds 2008 top-scorer with 30 tries, Paul White is set to make his long-awaited Super League bow for the club after picking up a pre-season injury in Jacksonville, Florida.
Initially it was hoped White would only miss the first game or so of the new campaign but Head Coach Shaun McRae has finally been able to name his flying winger in his 19-man squad to face Hull KR at Craven Park on Sunday.
Also coming into the 19 for a potential debut is former Saints junior Dean McGilvray, while John Wilshere also returns to the fold after a minor knee problem.
Mark Henry, Ian Sibbit and Steve Nash all make way through injury with Nash undergoing an operation on a thumb that is expected to keep him out for a month, but McRae will be pleased to see some new faces available in his outside back line where the Reds have struggled for numbers in recent weeks.
Paul White said: “I’m really pleased to be back in contention. It’s been really frustrating watching the lads go to work since Jacksonville and I’m really looking forward to making my Super League debut for Salford if the coach gives me the nod. I feel really sharp and training has gone well so I’m really looking forward to playing first grade again.”

Nash Has Surgery On Thumb Injury
March 27, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds young prop Steve Nash is set for a period on the sidelines after an operation to correct a problem with his thumb.
Nash will be unavailable for the next couple of rounds but there is better news for Head Coach Shaun McRae with the imminent return of some of his injured squad.
“We are starting to get close to get some bodies back. Whether that will be in time for Hull KR on Sunday I’m not sure if that will be too soon, but several players are nearly ready for selection,” said McRae.
The Reds will announce their 19-man squad for the trip to Craven Park this afternon.
Student Composers Vie for Reds Fanfare Honour
March 26, 2009 by Paul Mc · 2 Comments
Salford University and Salford City Reds are asking local people to help them choose a musical fanfare to herald the rugby team’s dramatic entrance onto the pitch in all future games.
Music students at the University are competing to clinch the winning prize and hear their fanfare broadcast to thousands of fans at The Willows during home games.
With the help of judges from Salford City Reds including CEO David Tarry, three finalists have been selected – and local people are being encouraged to listen online and vote for their favourite below
Composed by postgraduate and undergraduate music students, and performed by the University’s brass band, the three fanfares combine brass and percussion instruments to create a rousing musical entrance.
Nick Garbett, a final year BA Music student, is one of the finalists. He said: “I’m delighted to be shortlisted. The possibility of hearing my music as the players run onto the pitch is really exciting. I’m a big rugby fan so it would mean a lot to me to win.”
Nick’s tutor, Dr Mick Wilson added: “Salford City Reds originally contacted us to ask if we could come up with a fanfare, and it was an opportunity our students relished. I’m extremely impressed by the standard of entries and I’m confident the winning tune will do the Reds’ proud.”
The deadline for all votes is Good Friday (10 April) and the winning fanfare will be announced and played at The Reds’ home game against Hull FC on Saturday 25 April.
Salford City Reds’ CEO, David Tarry said: “Our partnership with the University continues to go from strength to strength and asking their students to come up with our new fanfare was a further opportunity to cement our relationship.
“The standard has exceeded our highest expectations and I’m sure whichever entry wins, our supporters will be happy with the result and the winning composer will rightly be proud of their achievements.”
The competition is the latest project between the University and the Reds as part of their official community partnership. The partnership has involved the Reds’ first team receiving fitness testing in the University’s hi-tech human performance labs, as well as the team relocating their training base to the University campus.
Now it’s down to you. Listen to all three entries below, decide on your favourite and email to marketing@reds.co.uk with the word FANFARE in the Subject heading and then your favourite along with your name and contact details in the body of the message.
All entrants will be place in a draw to win some autographed merchandise when the competition closes on Good Friday.
