No Hurry To Name New Team Captain

January 29, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

“Robbie Paul was the Captain at Widnes on Tuesday but he started on the bench so I made Rob Parker the on-field captain,” McRae said.

“I’m going to spend the next couple of days talking to some of the senior professionals so I can get an idea of which way we want to go, but realistically it will be the week of the Celtic game before I have an announcement to make.”

The Reds will have a new Junior price in operation where tickets are just £5 (£7 on the day) for Under 16 year-olds, but these tickets must be purchased from the Ticket Office. There will be no cash payment on the turnstile on the day.

McRae Pleased With ‘Controlled Performance’

January 28, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Reds’ head Coach Shaun McRae came away from his Salford side’s 12-40 win at the Stobart Stadium confident with how his pre-season is progressing.

The Reds were never in any danger throughout the game at Championship favourites Widnes Vikings and there were several stand-out performances from players that he will be well pleased with.

“It was a controlled performance and we can take great confidence from it. We were always in control and I thought we defended very well. What was particularly pleasing was of the last 11 sets of the first half, Widnes had eight and we held them out,” said McRae.

“If there was one disappointing aspect it would be that we lost the penalty count 12-8 so there are a few things we need to have a look at

“We got a much clearer picture of where we are at from the Widnes game than we did from playing four quarters against Leeds Rhinos. The players need to be given credit for what they just achieved. It’s extremely tough to fly through a five hour time-zone and put in that performance less than 48 hours later”, he continued.

“The players will train now for the rest of the week before having the weekend off before we go into our normal training schedule ahead of the game with Hull KR. That will be a stern game, they’re a very good side but things are progressing well and we’ll be in good shape for our opening game on Valentine’s Day.”

Tickets are available for the final trial game against Hull Kingston Rovers from the Club Shop, priced at £12 adults and £6 concessions.

Reds Cruise Past Vikings To Make Amends

The attention on this evening’s trial match at the Stobart Stadium was always going to be increased after the events of earlier in the day but the Reds will be pleased to have passed the test with flying colours and will now look to move on fully towards their Super League season after defeating the Vikings 12-40 on their own patch.

The Reds got off to a strong opening with quickfire tries in the 15 and 17th minutes from full-back Karl Fitzpatrick and new boy Willie Talau, but it was the Reds impressive half-back pairing of Jeremy Smith and Richie Myler who wreaked the early havok on the Vikings defence.

A terrific run by Smith in the 15th minute lead to Fitzpatrick slicing through the defence but Wilshere was unable to add the extras. The Reds showed huge team spirit by mobbing the scorer to celebrate the try.

It mattered not though as two minutes later it was the turn of Talau to set Myler through a gap and then supply the necessary support as the teenager raced away, before Big Willie took the final ball to go in under the posts and Wilshere added the extras.

Widnes were stunned by the relentless Reds attack and the fans, who have had a difficult day, only had to wait until the 26th minute before Myler was again was the architect, taking the ball from the 40 before drawing the full-back Wildbore and slipping it to Jordan Turner who went in under the posts before converting his own try. 0-16

The Vikings finally got a breakthrough with a 70m interception try from Thackery after a wayward pass from Jeremy Smith on 33 minutes as he raced away for a converted score. 6-16 and that was how it stayed until the break.

By now Wilshere had headed off down the tunnel with a soft tissue injury to his hand and the Reds will be hoping for some good news on that front for their Papua New Guinea captain just two weeks ahead of the big kick-off.

The second half began with a good period of pressure from the Vikings but the Reds held them out before Richie Myler scored a fantastic individual effort in the corner from 20m out with Turner adding the extras. 6-22.

In the 63 minute the Reds began to pull away with youngster Stefan Ratchford coming off the bench to score and convert his own individual effort. 6-28.

The Reds continued to torment Widnes with England International Myler kicking through on the last for Littler to pounce for his first with Ratchford again adding the two to make it 6-34, but there was some consolation for Vikings fans in the 73rd minute when Flynn went in for a converted try in the corner.

However, Ratchford completed a fantastic 20 minute cameo appearance by following up his own spiralling bomb to score under the posts and convert his own try again to complete the scoring for the evening 12-40.

Head Coach Mcrae will be pleased with the efforts of his back-row with the evening’s new Captain Rob Parker and Luke Swain in particular standing out and Malcolm Alker putting in a strong running performance. Richie Myler and Stef Ratchford were also outstanding in the halves and were ably supported by the experienced Jeremy Smith and Robbie Paul.

The players and fans shared a show of solidarity at the end with a linked armed gesture to the crowd and everybody will now look ahead to the final warm-up in Hull on Friday week.

Preview:

After a couple of days the Reds will rather put behind them they have the perfect chance to put previous wrongs right in the penultimate trial game against the Widnes Vikings. Head Coach Shaun McRae has named close to his strongest line-up and will be looking for some of his stars to make amends in this important pre-Super League clash.

Richie Myler again returns to his junior stomping ground and the England International will be keen to show how far he has progressed under the guidance of the Reds coaches.

Jordan Turner starts for the Reds in the centre and McRae will use this game as an opportunity to look at what he believes will be close to the team he begins the Super League campaign with.

Official Club Statement

January 27, 2009 by Paul Mc · 3 Comments

After a recent internal incident came to light during the training camp in Jacksonville, a small number of Reds’ players have been found to have broken club rules and subsequently face internal disciplinary procedures.

Following a meeting of the Board of Directors it has been determined that action may be taken against a small number of individuals, some after further internal investigations that are now underway.

Due to his involvement in a number of minor incidents recently, long-standing skipper Malcolm Alker has had the Captaincy of the club removed from him as part of the measures undertaken, other players will be dealt with appropriately.

The club has to act to instill a high level of professionalism in all players if it is to continue to progress.

The club would now like to move forward and believe this action sends out a clear signal that any breaches will be punished accordingly in order protect the integrity of Salford City Reds, its partners and supporters.

Details of a new captain for the 2009 engage Super League season will follow.
No further comment will be made on this issue.

Widnes Vikings v Reds – Full Strength Team For McRae

January 26, 2009 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Reds’ Head Coach Shaun will take a near full-strength team to the Stobart Stadium for their penultimate trial match against the Widnes Vikings.

Only Paul White misses out through injury but there is a return to action for Ian Sibbit in a squad made up of McRae’s star names.

“I’ve left out most of the younger fringe players in favour of the guys I’m looking to go with. Ian Sibbit returns and Jordan Turner will play a second game at centre.” McRae said at his team’s first training session at The Willows in 2009.

“We spoke at the end of last season with Jordan that we might be looking to try him at centre. At this moment in time Luke Swain and Luke Adamson are more sorted to loose forward and its a case of finding Jordan’s best position.”

Squad:

1 Fitzpatrick
2 Wilshire
14 Turner
4 Talau
3 Henry
6 Smith
7 Myler
8 Cashmere
9 Alker
10 Stapleton
20 Adamson
12 Parker
13 Swain

11 Sibbit
15 Littler
16 Leuluai
17 Paul
18 Jewitt
