Reds Roll Past Leigh In Super League Warm-Up

City Reds came out for this festive fixture with no sign of any Christmas cheer for their hosts, Leigh Centurions, playing their first game at their new home.

Head Coach Shaun McRae handed debuts to Super League squad stars Ray Cashmere and Jeremy Smith, as well as Andrew Thornley, Jack Spencer, Max Wiper and Brad Hargreaves from the junior ranks.

In fact it was the impressive Smith who opened the Reds’ scoring account with a debut try which was followed by others from Fitzpatrick, White, Ratchford and Academy youngster Hargreaves to give the Reds an unassailable 0-26 lead going into the final minutes when Leigh’s Jamie Smith snatched a late consolation try.

Debut scorer Jeremy Smith said afterwards: “I’m glad to get a game under my belt and look forward to the season ahead.”

Reds’ coach Shaun McRae said: “We have come through OK and that’s very pleasing, especially in a pre-season friendly. We’ve picked up bumps and bruises but we are OK.

“Leigh played with great enthusiasm. This was a very good work-out for us. Our young players handled it well. During one 15-minute spell, none of our players was more than 21. The youngsters handled the pressure well and acquitted themselves superbly.

“When we created chances we took them, we got what we expected from Leigh who were very enthusiastic.

“You can see Jeremy Smith has the bit of class about him, he played well in his first game.

“The senior pros did everything expected of them and the youngsters have smiles on their faces in the dressing room.

“It’s really pleasing to see such talent coming through.”

The Reds will now prepare for their warm-weather training camp departure on 12 January when they head to Jacksonville.

By that time their other two overseas recruits will have arrived with Luke Swain touching down tomorrow (Monday) and Mark Henry after his wedding in the first week of January.

The Reds wil then play Leeds Rhinos in Florida before taking on Widnes on 27 January upon their return.

A date is still being negotiated with Warrington Wolves over a further friendly ahead of the big kick-off on Valentine’s Day against the Crusaders.

Reds Stars To Test Themselves Against NFL’s Finest

December 27, 2008 by Paul Mc · 1 Comment

The Jack Del Rio Foundation will host a Football vs. Rugby Challenge as part of the pre-game entertainment at the January 17 International Rugby League Game, to be played between the Leeds Rhinos and the Salford Reds, to raise money for 3 local Jacksonville Charities.

The Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (Jack Del Rio) set up the Jack Del Rio Foundation in June of 2008 to help meet the needs of the undeserved youth in the region. The Jaguars coach has set his sights on being directly involved in the foundation and establishing deep roots in the Jacksonville Area. (www.jackdelriofoundation.com)

Event organizer Spinner Howland approached the Foundation with the idea of creating a fund raising event that centers around some skills challenges which would put some of the Jacksonville Jaguars Players up against some of the Pro Rugby players. “To be honest I have always wondered how the Rugby League players would fare if put up against the American Football guys. There has always been plenty of talk about the two sports and which athletes are faster, stronger, etc. This challenge will help answer some of those questions and raise money for local charities at the same time”, Howland said.

The Challenge will see a set of skills that are common in both sports designed to test players from all three teams. There will be some kicking test that will not only determine punting distance but also accuracy with some field goals having to be kicked from the sidelines like they do in Rugby. Players will also have to kick both types of balls. There will also be some sprint tests and an agility test to see which players prove more allusive on their feet at speed. Players from each team will compete for their selected charity in each event and the prize money allocated will be donated based on where their player finishes in each event.

The Jaguar players will obviously compete for the Jack Del Rio Foundation and the players from Leeds and Salford will be paired with the Jacksonville USO and Dreams Come True.

Both the visiting teams are excited about an opportunity to not only test themselves against some NFL Players but more importantly leave a positive impression in Jacksonville by helping raise the profile of the charities involved and some money at the same time. After the way the city of Jacksonville embraced both teams that competed in the Australia Day Challenge last January everyone involved with this new event is eager to show their gratitude by being able to assist the local organizations, especially in this current economic market.

The Leeds Rhinos and the Salford Reds will be hosted to an afternoon at the Jaguar facility just as the visiting teams where last year. These tours are one of the highlights for the players from the Rugby teams and both clubs are excited that the partnership with the Jacksonville Jaguars has now spawned a new association with the teams head coach. The acceptance of the idea from the Jack Del Rio Foundation speaks volumes at the sincerity of the Del Rio family to truly become a Jacksonville Charity that goes well beyond the game of football and reaches into the grass roots of the local community.

The pre-game challenge will start on the field at 2pm and the charity raffle that will also raise funds for all three charities will be drawn at halftime along with check presentations to each organization.
Tickets for the event are now on sale at www.jaxaxe.com, Bad Ass Coffee (Beach Blvd at Huffman), Walkabout Café (Atlantic and Hodges beside Outback Steakhouse) and Time Out Sports Grill (Beach Blvd just East of Hodges).

Information For Fans Travelling to Leigh Friendly

December 23, 2008 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Following the successful ‘ramp event’ at the new Leigh Sports Village Stadium on 14 December 2008 when local the Licensing Authority assessed the safety management of the Stadium in order to issue a Safety Certificate, a certificate has now been issued.  However, due to the late handover of the Stadium by the developer, the fixture between Leigh Centurions and Salford City Reds will have a limited capacity of 4775 spectators.

This fixture, on Sunday 28 December, will therefore be an all ticket event and there will be no cash turnstiles on the day.  Kick-off is 3.00pm; turnstiles open from 1.30pm.

Leigh Sports Village Company and Leigh Centurions would ask that fans purchase their tickets prior to the day to avoid disappointment.

Tickets can be purchased from the Stadium reception during office hours and from the ticket office on Saturday between 10.00am and 5.15pm.

Leigh Sports Village Company would also urge that people look at their travel options for the day as car parking is limited on site and would advise people to park in Leigh Town Centre, just a ten minute walk away.  Details of all car parks are available on the Leigh Sports Village website.

Reds Ready To Rock Christmas

December 21, 2008 by Paul Mc · 1 Comment

While we are all tucking into our festive turkey next Thursday spare a thought for the Reds’ squad who will be making final preparations for their first competitive game of the 2009 season – while we are still in 2008!

Christmas in the McRae household may well see the trinkets from Christmas crackers being turned into makeshift player markers and being shoved around the dinner table as the Reds’ Head Coach plots the Salford City Reds return to Super League.

While some of his player still recuperate from post-season surgery and Luke Swain arriving the day after the fixture from Australia with Mark Henry following a week later, McRae still intends to use the game as a milestone in his close-season progress.

New Kiwi International half-back Jeremy Smith has been chomping at the bit to get going and McRae told us: “Jeremy has looked very good in training, he has a great kicking game and he’s a thinker but he also brings a bit of aggression into the half-back role which is something you don’t always see a lot of.”

Meanwhile, Ray Cashmere, one of the stand-out forwards of last season’s NRL has also been preparing hard and getting ready to throw his not inconsiderable frame into action for the first time in Reds’ colours.

“We have a few milestones to pass before we come up against Celtic Crusaders in Round 1 on Valentine’s Day. From Leigh we head to Florida to play Leeds before coming back and taking on Widnes. Each of these games are important to us and will give me, and indeed the fans, a fresh opportunity to see how the new guys are shaping up and also what kind of close-season our established squad-members have had. We’re really looking forward to a big challenge next season.

“I’d also just like to wish all of our supporters a very merry Christmas from everybody on our coaching and playing staff.”; McRae concluded.

Tickets are still on sale for Salford’s historic festive fixture at Leigh Centurions on Sunday, December 28, kick-off 3pm.

It will be the first game played at the Centurions’ new home at Leigh Sports Village. And Salford will be wearing one of their 2009 strips for the first time.

Tickets priced at £12 for adults and £5 for concessions are available from Salford’s club shop until 5pm on Tuesday, December 23.

For more details call the club shop on: 0161 736 6564.
