Young Guns Sign Up For Reds’ Challenge

July 31, 2008 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

As Salford City Reds continue to prepare for their return to Super League for the 2009 season, the club can confirm the signings of Stefan Ratchford and Adam Sidlow on three year and two year contracts respectively.

Both 20 years of age, the utility back and prop have made great strides in the first team this season, proving that they are capable of holding a place in next year’s Super League.

Director of Football, Steve Simms said:

“This is great news for the club and an investment in the young players on the team.  I believe we have lots more to come from these two promising players.”

A product of the Reds Academy, Ratchford was voted the U21’s player of the year in 2007, making six Super League first team appearances in the same year, whilst Sidlow will make his Super League debut next season having been signed from Widnes prior to the 2008 season.

Reds Head Coach, Shaun McRae commented:

“Both Stefan and Adam have earned the right to Super League contracts with their performances this season.  They are now able to take the next step on the ladder and handle week in, week out pressures that Super League provides.”

The Reds travel to Halifax this evening for round 15 of the National League with Robbie Paul back in the starting line up, with a win tonight taking them seven points clear at the top of the league table.

SALFORD celebrated their pending elevation to the Super League by putting rivals Leigh in their place at the Willows last night.

Reds turned the screw in the second half last night to round off a momentous and eventful week for the club.

It was one-way traffic after the break as Salford’s superior skill shone through and proved too much for Neil Kelly’s spirited Centurions.

Leigh bagged a couple of tries from Ian Mort and Dave Alstead but the outcome of this one was never in doubt.

Mal Alker, Richard Myler, John Wilshere, Adam Sidllow, Stefan Ratchford and Jordan Turner powered over for second-half tries to increase Reds’ lead at the top of National League One.

The Reds had led 10-4 at the break thanks to tries from Paul White and Matt Gardner.

Mort replied for the Centurions but Salford looked the part and now offer a great opportunity for seasoned players.

With only four games left before the play-offs, several Reds players are hoping to land Super League contracts.

Reds are among a number of clubs who have already been alerted about the possible availability next season of Saints star Paul Sculthorpe.

He could join his brother Danny at Wakefield but would prefer a move closer to his Wigan base if he is to prolong his career.

Sculthorpe claims he still has plenty to offer but potential buyers would be taking a huge gamble bearing his mind his horrendous injury record and his age.

Reds will certainly have to bolster their squad and therefore it was not surprising to see Andrew Clarke in the main stand mingling with players in between checking test messages.

Clarke, one of the game’s most high profile agents, has lost no time this week informing Reds of players within his stable who may be of interest to them in the near future.

Free giveaway at game this Friday

July 23, 2008 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Here’s something for you to thank everybody for great support this season courtesy of our new friends and sponsors at HD Cable.

The Willows will be awash with red this Friday (25 July) courtesy of the Reds new 2009 sponsor hdcable.co.uk.

To celebrate the Reds return to engage Super League for the 2009 season, hdcable.co.uk is generously giving away thousands of FREE commemorative “Super Salford!” T-Shirts, to supporters attending this Friday’s clash against Leigh Centurions.

Chris Pinder, MD of HD Cable said:

“We wanted to do something for the fans to celebrate all the club’s fantastic achievements so far this year. I thought of buying all the fans a pint but that would have left out all the younger supporters! So a T-Shirt is something that fans can take away, keep and hopefully wear with pride. After yesterday’s news the ‘Super Salford!’ slogan seemed to sum up everything perfectly.”

Supporters will be able to pick up T-shirts in the ground on Friday night before the game and the club are urging all fans to join in the celebrations and wear their T-shirts with pride as they mark their win of the Northern Rail Cup and a return to Super League.

Tickets for the game are on sale from the club shop priced at £15 for adults and £9 for children.  For further information call the ticket office on 0161 736 6564.
