Dorn Breaks for Willows

August 9, 2006 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds have announced the capture of Australian stand-off Luke Dorn from Harlequins on a two year deal beginning next season.

Dorn has been a long-time target for the Reds’ coaching staff since it became apparent that Andrew Dunemann would be returning Down Under at the end of this season.

Dorn’s capture has excited the Reds as the try-scoring half-back will now hopefully form an electric partnership with the in-form Luke Robinson.

Reds’ Director of Football Steve Simms said: “Luke has pace to burn. He is a try scorer and there is an awful lot of quality there.

“He has outstanding speed and we are hoping that with the other Luke (Robinson), we will have one of the best half-back partnerships in next year’s competition and it will enable us to kick on even further than we have this year.”

Meanwhile the Reds’ can also announce that Assistant Coach James Lowes has signed a 2-year contract extension that will keep him at The Willows until the end of the 2008 season.

Lowes has recently been linked with several high-profile Head Coach positions and Simms was understandably delighted to secure his services for the next two seasons.

“Jimmy told us he never wanted to leave. He told me just now that he sees a very bright future here at Salford, especially with the new Stadium on the horizon and he is desperate to be part of that success.

“He is a great coach and we want to surround our players with men of his calibre.”

Reds ban Further Supporter

August 8, 2006 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

A further banning order has been issued by the club to a Salford City Reds supporter following the incident at the game against Les Catalans Dragons at Narbonne.

The individual concerned has now been banned from attending all further home games this season, although it should be noted that the supporter helped his case considerably by co-operating fully with the club.

Salford City Reds CEO, David Tarry said, ‘Once again my thanks to the supporters who came forward giving a detailed account of the incident in Narbonne. With this level of cooperation the club is able to deal swiftly and effectively with these problems”

The club would like to reiterate that bottles are banned from The Willows and would ask all supporters to refrain from bringing their own bottled drinks into the ground.

Crowd Incident

August 3, 2006 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

APPEAL FOR INFORMATION

Salford City Reds have been notified by the RFL of a disciplinary complaint in relation to the Super League match between Catalan Dragons and Salford City Reds on the 22nd July 2006. It is alleged that after the 72nd minute try by a Catalan Dragons player that a bottle was thrown on to the pitch from an area of the ground where the Salford fans were seated.

This is another very serious matter and the club would like to urge any Reds fans who witnessed this incident to come forward in confidence and identify the culprit(s) for us so that they can be dealt with accordingly. This kind of behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated by either Salford City Reds or the Rugby Football League.

Related to this we would like to remind all supporters that with immediate effect all bottled drinks are now banned from the ground – you will neither be allowed to bring them in with you, or purchase them from the food outlets inside The Willows.

We realise that this move has upset some fans, but felt that there was no other option open to us in light of these repeated incidents and the threat of severe sanctions hanging over the club.

D-Day Looms for Barton Project

August 1, 2006 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds will find out in November if they will be granted permission for their proposed new £140million stadium.

The engage Super League club’s proposals to relocate to a brownfield site near the M60 at Barton were considered by a public inquiry which ended last month.

The Reds have now been told that a decision on the project will be made by Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, on or before November 28.

Chairman John Wilkinson said: “It’s great that we finally have an end date. It has been a long and interesting process to get to the stage that the club is at, and now the waiting is almost over.

“I am confident the Secretary of State will give the Reds and the people of Salford the best present we could ever wish for and grant us our new stadium for the future.”

Salford have been at The Willows for 105 years and currently attract average crowds of 4,500, but they hope to reinvent themselves with their new 20,000-capacity arena.

The site chosen for development will also feature a hotel, restaurants and a retail park if given the go-ahead.
