Stadium Called in for Inquiry

John Prescott announced today that the plans for Salfords’ new 20,000 seat stadium are to be called in for an inquiry.
The landmark project on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal and adjacent to the M60 Ship Canal flyover has already been through detailed scrutiny by Salford City Council who indicated their desire to give permission to the scheme at a planning committee meeting on November 17th.
The scale of the project, its location and the enabling retail will all be assessed again by an independent inspector appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister.
John Wilkinson Chairman of Salford City Reds said today,
“We are obviously disappointed that it is felt an inquiry is needed. We worked for over 2 and a half years with Salford Council on our planning application. Supporters will be down-hearted. However, people know my commitment to the club and the City, and I have been confident from the start in our plan. Many of the issues have been looked at in detail by an inspector as part of the UDP process and Salford’s Planning Committee gave it their 100% approval. In Rugby Terms this is extra time; we wont be found wanting”.
The next steps are for a planning inspector to be appointed and for a date for the hearings to be announced. The inspectors report is then presented to John Prescott for his final decision.
John Wilkinson added,
“What we do need is a decision as quickly as possible. It’s essential for the club, the City and the regeneration of Barton. With such unanimous support amongst the local authority, MP’s and all statutory consultees we are looking for a swift timeline to a decision.”

Salford City Reds have secured the services of half-back starlet Luke Robinson for a further two years after offering a contract extension.
Robinson signed the extended deal on Friday and it takes the tenacious little scrum-half through to the end of the 2008 season.
Both the Reds and the player are preparing to fly to their annual Florida training camp on Monday for 10 days.
Steve Simms said: “Luke is getting better all the time and we’re looking for big things from him this season.”
The Reds have also completed the signing of promising youngster Daly Williams from Keighley.
Simms told us: “Daly is a promising young player. He played first team for Keighley and we believe he will go from strength to strength and improve as time goes by.”
