Lowes Joins Forces With Rhino
November 25, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
Salford City Reds stars have reported back for duty and amongst them were several new faces including new Assistant Coach Jimmy Lowes.
Lowes moves from Odsal in what was one of the worst kept secrets in Rugby League to link up with old Bradford sparring partner Karl Harrison.
Other new faces being put through their pre-season paces by the coaching staff were Ian Sibbit, David Hodgson and Stuart Dickens. Meanwhile Luke Robinson has been given a little extra time to recover from his European Nations sucess with England.
Also missing are Down Under stars Kevin McGuiness, Junior Langi, Cliff Beverley, Mark Shipway and Sean Rutgerson who don’t return to the country until shortly before New Year.
THey will link up with their British based team-mates for the game against Swinton Lions before heading off to the USA for their warm-weather training camp.
RedPlanet would like to welcome Jimmy, Ian, David, Stuart, Luke and Junior to the squad.
It’s ‘Friday Night Football’
November 24, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
The weekend now starts with a bang at The Willows! Salford City Reds are excited to announce that we have made a return to Friday Night Football after a 23-year break.
The Reds who were pioneers of Friday Night Football throughout the 70s now feel that Friday nights will give a far better opportunity to grow their audience in the current climate and with the acceptance of summer rugby.
The City Reds’ home fixtures in Super League X will kick-off on Friday evenings, setting the weekend off with a spectacular bang and giving our loyal fans the chance to spend their Sundays a little more sedately.
It had become apparent that the competition for people’s valuable leisure time is hotting up with some many options available, and we feel we may be asking to much to expect fans to write off a whole day. Our fans also have a limited budget and we need to be giving them the first option to spend it with us on Friday watching some spectacular sport at The Willows.
We are very aware that Summer Sundays are often taken up with family commitments and it is not always possible to come and cheer the lads on as often as people would like. Friday Night Football will give the fans their weekend back, while allowing new and returning supporters the opportunity to experience top class Super League with the more intense atmosphere that night games always seem to create.
Football Director Steve Simms also sees huge benefits for the Reds Super League X campaign: “Super League is all about good preparation. Playing Friday Night Football will give our squad more preparation and recovery time and put us on a level playing field with the so-called main teams.
“Last season we found ourselves disadvantaged by playing on Sundays. Often teams like Bradford and Leeds are the televised Sky game on the Friday so they have nine days to prepare for playing us the following Sunday whereas we only get seven. This evens things up.
“There’s everything to play for this season with two going down and Friday Night Football will allow our boys to be better prepared both physically and mentally.”
Media Manager Carolyn Derbyshire said: “Friday Night Football gives us an opportunity to grow our audience and give Sundays back to our existing loyal supporters who have stuck with us through thick and thin. There are so many other things for people to do on a Sunday – a three o’clock kick off takes up the whole day for many people so now they can come and see the Reds and still enjoy the summer weekends!”

Reds Launch Season Ticket Exchange and New Youth Pass
November 23, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
For the first time ever Salford City Reds will be introducing a new scheme for Season Ticket Holders. This year, each ticket in the book will be printed up with the name of the relevant opposition. Now, we know that occasionally people do miss a game due to holiday commitments etc, but we aim to provide you with a solution to that problem!
We will be operating a season ticket voucher exchange scheme. Put simply, if you are unable to attend a game, you will have 7 days to then present the unused voucher (presented in it’s entirety with the rest of the season ticket book!) and exchange for a match ticket for the next Salford City Reds home Super League game!
It will then offer you the perfect opportunity to bring along a friend or member of your family to share the excitement and atmosphere at the Willows.
We hope that you’ll find this scheme useful, money saving and reflects our commitment to providing the best service possible to our fans.
In addition, and in response to suggestions and feedback from supporters, we’re introducing a new “Youth” season pass. We recognise that for some of our young supporters aged between 16 – 18, especially those who aren’t in full time education, the jump from a junior ticket to adult ticket can be a bit on the pricey side.
In order to soften the blow somewhat, we have agreed that a new ticket will be available to any 16 – 18 year old who provides proof of age that will cost the same as a concessionary priced ticket – that’s just £80 if you buy before November 30 – a fantastic saving of £32!
Don’t forget all season tickets include vouchers for home Super League matches and home senior and junior academy games – Junior tickets also include vouchers for all Super League away matches too – we reckon it’s one of the best deals around!
See Historic Salford RLFC Film at Cornerhouse
November 21, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
As part of the launch of a new English Heritage series on sporting heritage, the Cornerhouse is holding a film evening on December 9 showing three rarely seen documentaries about sport in the north west.
One of the films is about Salford RLFC, made in 1969 by the Salford University film unit, recently discovered by the North West Film Archive.
It is about 20 minutes long and shows the team in the dressing room immediately after a Boxing Day fixture v. Barrow. It is a frank, fly-on-the-wall film with no commentary, and is very revealing about the players and the way of life of a rugby league play of that era i.e. lots of steamy baths, post-match fags and Brycreem! (please note the film contains a little nudity)
Salford players featured include Bill Burgess, David Watkins, Jackie Brennan, Colin Dixon, Maurice Richards, Chris Hesketh, Paul Charlton, Stuart Whitehead, Ron Hill – Bob Burdell is also caught replacing his hairpiece after the game!
Also shown is the club chairman Brian Snape, coach Griff Jenkins, backroom boy Syd Hickman and local journalist Tom Bergin. There is also footage from Salford’s trip to Wembley in 1969 and the post match dinner in London.
Here is a candid and at times poignant reminder of England at play, in the days before shirt sponsors and satellite TV; when a half time cup of tea and a fag was as much a part of the players’ regime as a post-match communal bath and a tub of Brylcreem.
This unique evening will be presented by Simon Inglis, author of a new English Heritage book, ‘Played in Manchester’, who will give a short presentation on Manchester’s sporting heritage and introduce each film.
He will be signing copies of his book after the films. (For more information see www.playedinbritain.co.uk)

Trafford Centre Sign Historic Deal With Reds
November 16, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off
The Trafford Centre, Manchester’s £1.3billion shopping and leisure destination, is delighted to announce a deal with Salford City Reds Rugby League Club for 2005.
The deal, worth £200,000, will see The Trafford Centre’s branding on the team’s shirts as well as branding at the Salford stadium. The partnership will also extend to community projects in and around the Greater Manchester region in an effort to encourage school children to exercise regularly and to raise the profile of the sport.
Gordon McKinnon, Director of Operations at The Trafford Centre said: “The sponsorship of Salford City Reds is a mutually beneficial partnership between the leading shopping and retail destination in the north west, and one of the most successful rugby league clubs in the UK. We are delighted to be able to support a local sports team and hope that this deal will be the start of a long and beneficial relationship between ourselves and the club.”
David Tarry, Chief Executive at Salford City Reds said: “The club is excited and eager to be associated with an organisation of the calibre of the Trafford Centre. The branding, promotional and marketing opportunities offered by this partnership will be a great boon to the club, and as importantly, to the community. The level of commitment and desire to work in the community alongside the Reds has been most impressive.”
Message From Patricia Goldsmith

I hope I find you all well.
I thought it would be remiss of me not to write and introduce myself. It is a great honour to be asked by our Chairman, Mr. John Wilkinson, OBE to join the Board of Directors at Salford City Reds at this most exciting time in the history of Salford. My brief is to work alongside the business community and supporters to help to give the Club and everyone associated with it, the success you all deserve.
John’s integrity and honesty firstly attracted me to the Club however his passion and dream for Salford City Reds, as well as his aspirations and commitment to the City of Salford, were key factors in my decision to come to Salford. However, after meeting the business community and the supporters on Saturday evening at the Chairman’s Ball and in particular a lady who is 92 years of age, Mary, I was left with no doubt that I wanted to be part of John’s and the citizens of Salford’s vision for their Club and their City. The move, to what will be an iconic stadium, business and leisure centre, will be a dream come true for the Club and the community of Salford
My role will encourage me to be part of all aspects of club life with emphasis placed on securing the growth of our income/revenue at the Willows over the next two years into our iconic new stadium at Barton in 2006/2007. I hope to play a key role, with the support of John, the Board, the business community and the supporters in building partnerships with particular emphasis on communications and customer care.
I have been through a similar process once before with the move of Hull F.C. from the Boulevard to the Kingston Communications stadium and I feel that my experience as Managing Director of the Management board at Hull F.C. will allow us all to maximise the many opportunities open for Salford City Reds.
One thing I can state without hesitation is that if we are to strengthen and grow the Club we need to all work together to achieve our goal. Your help in securing new season ticket holders and supporters (particularly the juniors) to the club, new sponsors and volunteers can only be achieved if we work as a team and therefore your involvement and support will be invaluable in the coming months.
On a personal point of view. I am 48 years of age, happily married to my husband Steve and have two children Marc 25 and Sarah 23 years of age. I come from a very close family who live in Co. Durham. My husband and I intend to live and work in Salford and travel to see our family at weekends. We travel to all away games and I obviously will be available at all home games. We are very excited and thrilled to be part of Salford City Reds and will both give 100% to help deliver “your dream” for your Club and your City.
I hope to meet you all soon.
Take care and god bless.
