Supporter’s Meeting Re-Scheduled

July 30, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

The supporter’s meeting which was originally scheduled for end of July is now due to take place on Tuesday Aug 3.

The topic of this one is Commercial and Media and will be handled by Andrew Bentham (commercial) and Paul McNally (media and web)

So if you want to come along and have a natter about where we’ve been and where we’re going it would be great to see you.

Ideally we would like supporters to come along armed with ideas of what they’d (realistically) like to see in the future in these targetted areas.

Andrew is always after new sponsors and contacts in local businesses. Maybe your employer would like to sponsor some part of the Reds empire. Just get us the contact details and we’ll do the rest.

It’s a 7 o clock start and is set for the IT classroom on Willows Road.

These meetings are a good way to get to know people at the club. After all it is your club and we are genuinely keen to meet you all and hear your views.

Second Family Bonaza Day Announced

July 15, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

As promised ‘Find a Fan’ is back. This is your chance to bring along friends to try out Super League for FREE at our next Family Bonanza Day.

The last time we did this promotion it was a glorious sunny afternoon and the City Reds almost caused a momentous upset against the World Champions, Bradford Bulls. This time we’re hoping to go one better against title-chasing Hull FC.

The promotion is open to all Salford supporters wanting to bring along potential NEW supporters to The Willows. Existing supporters already held in our database are ineligible for free entry. We are doing this to promote the club to fresh faces to increase our supporter base and showcase the fantastic product that is Super League.

As with the last Family Bonanza Day the pre-match entertainment will set the scene for the sporting heroics to come. THe event is once again hosted by top MC Pete Nuttall, the voice of Rugby League and he will be presenting the day’s pop act, special guests and of course champion cheerleaders, the City Reds very own Flames.

Supporters on our email database will be receiving an invitation to invite their guests in the next 48 hours. Please follow the links in this email to make things simpler for yourself.

Fans without email addresses were mailed last week. Anybody not on our database, or if you don’t receive communication from the club, can register guests HERE

Please familiarise yourself with the TERMS & CONDITIONS of this offer.

Fans are reminded that the day’s opponents, Hull FC, traditionally bring a large number of travelling supporters to The Willows and we respectfully request you take up your positions as early as possible.

City Reds Publish ‘Find-a-Fan’ Report

July 9, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds today publish their initial report into the Find-a-Fan scheme that was launched at the recent Family Bonanza Day against the Bradford Bulls (see here for details).

The club are pleased to announce that its initial target of one guest per fan that actually invited somebody was reached. However, somewhat sadly, only 90 fans actually managed to invite people (excluding staff).

The 90 supporters that invited people managed to bring along 95 guests (plus children) and these potential new supporters received a discounted entrance offer to the Castleford Tigers game and will do so again for this week’s visit of Wigan.

12 guests who could not attend the Bradford game attended the Tigers game

55 guests who came to the Bradford game took up the £5 offer along with 18 children – 85 guests in total.

However a further 10 guests were identified as existing supporters and will be taken of the list for further invites and offers as this harms the club. Please advise us if you know of others!

We will have to wait and see how fans react to the next and future family days which will be against Hull, and a final one against Warrington towards the back end of the season before we can assess the full impact.

We are confident that the scheme will work well under the right circumstances in an environment with a reasonable level of on field success over a relative period of time.

However it is important that we continue with this work and hope that fans will respond more positively to invite people to future family days having seen one at first hand.

The Reds also ran Find a Fan at the game against Hull FC in August. Similar percentage results were born out across Find a Fan 2 in that for each guest that actually registered a friend, one new face attended.

In fact, 39 people invited just under 70 guests in total. Some were unable to attend and have been logged in the system for further invites.

Meanwhile, several more fans were identified as existing supporters and removed from the scheme.

Find a Fan will continue in Super League X and the experiences we have had will enable us to improve the system still further as we believe it is a working model and we wish to encourage our existing fan base to bring people along to try the sport for free.

U21s Crush Dragons to Keep the Pressure On

July 9, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds 54 Doncaster Dragons 8 (HT 26-8)

A powerhouse performance from the young Reds pack laid the foundations for another big victory for the high flying Reds. Doncaster were in fourth at kick off and the Reds knew they would have to be on their guard if they were to maintain the challenge for the Division One title.

The Dragons employed strong arm tactics but could not get the better of a pack magnificently led by John Clough as he weighed in with four tries as the City Reds totally dominated their Yorkshire opponents.

There’s no doubt there are good things going on at the resurgent Dragons these days but Steve Blakeley’s side is made of stern stuff too.

With only a few games to go it remains to be seen whether the Reds can sneak into the top spot ahead of Leigh and Huddersfield, but their fate is entirely in their own hands as they have them both to play still.

Mark Stevens (2)
Dean Gorton (2)

Reds Transfer Latest

July 8, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

With the transfer rumour mill in full swing Salford City Reds today confirmed the successful capture of Tim Jonkers on loan from St Helens.

As revealed exclusively on Friday Jonkers comes in on loan with the Reds keen to have a look at making the deal more long term.

We spoke to Steve Simms who told us: “Jonkers is here and he’ll be straight in the squad for the Wigan game on Sunday.”

Meanwhile the Reds have been linked for a long time with the two UTC based players Djamel Fakir and Duncan MacGillivray. Simms told us: “Fakir’s still playing and we’ll be assessing his situation when he’s finished this week but MacGillivray has decided to join Wakefield.”

The other name linked with the Reds of late has been ex London Bronco Dom Peters who has recently completed a 12-month ban from the game.

“Dom’s agent rang and asked if we were interested and we said we’d be happy for him to come and spend a couple of days training with us while we have a look at him we’d be happy to do that.”

Coley Signs New Three-Year Deal

July 8, 2004 by Paul Mc · Comments Off

Salford City Reds pack star Andy Coley has delighted the club by putting pen to paper on a new three year deal keeping him at the club until 2007.

The Reds have beaten off competition from Super League’s top clubs for Andy including Wigan Warriors.

A thrilled Steve Simms spoke exclusively to Reds Online within minutes of the deal being signed: “Obviously it’s a great signing for us. The big clubs are after him and we felt we’ve put a lot of work into Andy, Karl especially and we feel that he is the way forward for our club.”

“We need to keep good young players coming through and we know he’s a player for the future.”

Simms was adamant that Coley had always wanted to stay with the Reds and admits he was flattered at being able to keep hold of the highly rated pack man.

“Most players ambitions are to play for your Wigans and St Helens and this shows that Andy feels the same way as we do as a club, that we’re progressing the way we want to head. We want to be a big club and when the new stadium comes along we will be a big club and Andy wants to be part of that! Andy wants to be part of a new generation at Salford City Reds”

Head coach Karl Karrison was equally bubbly: “I’m delighted. It shows the club are going in the right direction. We just need to get a few more points, establish ourselves in Super League and add a few more to the squad and we’re certainly going the right way!”

“This shows that we can compete. There were several clubs after Andy Coley and he decided to stay at Salford so it proves at the end of the day we must be doing something right!”
